Hello to the forum

Postby JonathanR » Mar 13th, '11, 12:31

Hi,

I'm a hobbyist, who originally had a teenage interest in card magic (many years ago...). I've come back to it as my daughters have spotted my various books and asked me to 'show them something'. So, I've started practicing again and hope this forum can give me some tips to increase my (frankly) terrible dexterity. I've been lurking for a while and really enjoy the discussions that go on here, so hope I can continue to learn, and maybe contribute something, too.

Thanks for the response.

One thing I wanted to mention: I work as a lighting designer, so I am very interested in how lighting can be used in performance to 'enhance' some effects - either through colour, angle of lighting - anything really. I was once given a tour of Siegfried & Roy's staging in Vegas by one of their lighting people. He was *very* careful to make sure he didn't give anything away, but from one lighting guy to another, it was interesting to see how their lighting could 'assist', as it were...

The opening chapter of 'Sleights of Mind' on the neuroscience of magic ( see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sleights-Mind-n ... pd_sim_b_1 ) relates an effect by Johnny Thompson where very swift and close attention to lighting is vital.

Mandrake,

Thank you for the pointer - by a piece of synchronicity, I am reading just that very book at the moment...
