Photoshop for free anyone?

Postby Beardy » Apr 7th, '11, 20:14

I jest ;)

I'm not really after photoshop for free, but on the same token I don't need it enough to spend £600 odd.

All I wish to be able to do is to cut people out of photos and maybe fill in the background with...well....background, to be able to add people into other photos (for example, a photo of me added into a photo of mandrake to make us look like buddies!), and to be able to edit out "blemishes" - so if it had a blemish tool that would be nice!

So does there exist a piece of software like this which doesn't cost the bestter part of half a grand which does all this?

Regards! :)

Love

Chris

You have a few choices, but I would suggest:

The GNU image Manipulation Program aka Gimp (Be Mature!) is a free image editor with vaguely the same capabilities of Photoshop, and a search on Google can get you GIMPshop, which is a remapping of Gimp so it has the same layout as Photoshop.

Alternatively, if you don't fancy downloading or installing free open source stuff, you can use the web-based Pixlr which does everything in the browser. Very handy for quick edits when there's nothing installed...

Both are free, so take your pick...

You can do all of that in MSPaint also, it just takes a bit more work than with PS.

Gimp is pretty much you get what you pay for

For a one-off, you can download a free trial. Other things to look into is student discount (I seem to recall they do them) and photoshop elements

Photoshop Elements is about a tenth the price of Photoshop, and will probably do what you want.

I might have an older version of Serif PhotoPlus lying around, which you're welcome to have if you promise to give it a good home. Let me know whether I ought to start looking around for it.

GIMP is very good and will do just about anything that you're likely to want to do with Photoshop. :D

Elements is more than good enough and costs about £60. Most of the the stuff in the full version you'll never use unless you're doing photography for a living (and even then likely as not use those features rarely).

I noticed on Amazon they are selling Elements 7 for £17, which is just two versions behind and will more than do what you need.
