Hi all,

I'm completely new at this (and slightly worried that I'm starting way too late at 36!). My main interest is coin magic - I can (mostly) see how things are done but am severely lacking in the dexterity department so I'm a long way from being able to do things myself with any degree of subtlety, but it's coming slowly. Still, I sit at a very quiet Post Office village counter for most of the day so I should have plenty of time (and coins) to learn with. My main aim is just to be able to fool some of the people some of the time, but ideally without gimmicked coins if I can help it.

Mentalism/cold reading etc I find intellectually fascinating (how did he do that???) but probably of little practical use to me. I have a lot of respect for card magicians but have no hope of reaching even middling standard there and sitting at work with cards would look odd.

Anyway, it's nice to be here.

Hi Ian and welcome to TM.

First off, it's NEVER too late to start and you appear to have the perfect environment to practice all that you can during quiet periods. The coins will fit in very well with what you're doing work wise, which is always handy. I'll use the practice word again and you should, with some choice reading be fooling everyone who's a lay person (not a magician).

You will soon note from other posts that the bible for coin magic is Bobo's coin magic and if you look online and at the reviews section you will also note a number of coin and money magic DVD's that you can learn from if books are not your thing.

Anyway, welcome again and keep practicing (said it again).

Hi ian (wish I was 36! ) and welcome to the forum.

I'd have thought there were many tricks that you could practice whilst sitting behind a Post Office counter. There's loads of tricks that you could do, refine and practice (try going the day with a coin in either (or both) hand(s), before you know it you'd be the menatlism, close-up, card and coin man.

Just imagine pension day - all those coins and banknotes you can produce from the ears of wrinklies (and that's just the start)>

Two of my favourite money tricks are:

Pouring water out of a rolled up bank note using a TT after explaining that the water comes from the water mark, and

an adaptation using real bank notes of the JB Magic's paper to money

Both very easy but visual with practice and good presentation.

the problem that you have is that your customers might think that the money is dodgy and not want it

You are never too old to start learning, although I have a good knowledge of cards, I didn't start learning coins until about 5 yrs ago so you beat me on age in that respect....

As has been suggested, take a coin to work, press it into your palm and try typing with it there...it will be difficult but you will get the nack...and before long you willl be picking up things with it still in your palm....
