for adults I'm jason the mystery man (blaine ripped my off) :D
for outdoor events I'm harlequin jason (coz of the jester suit)
for psychic shows I'm jason darkman

all of the personas come under magicdisco party people so you don't have to have one name you can have a trading name and personas.

Hello there.

What's your style? On a poster, your name has to start creating your persona in the minds of potential specs. It sets up an expectation of what's to come.

If you're from the goatee and black roll-necked sweater camp then a short first name as a second name would do it. I don't know if there's a real magician working as "Larry Paul", and my appologies if there is, but that name just popped into my head as a good example.

A more mystical routine sounds better done by someone with a slightly unusual name that hints at a background spent studying with the ancients and a vague romany ancestry.

If you're doing something more bizarre or mental then the more outrageous your act is, the more normal the name. This seems to generate a nicely resonant contrast. A certain Mr Brown of Channel 4 fame has has kept his own, but has twisted his christian name by one letter to make it stand out.

You could always muck about just putting sylables together until you get something interesting. Then check to make sure it's completely unique by running it by Google, or even very gruesome...

Do you really need a stage name?

I have just secured one of the biggest trade show contracts in the country, and I was asked, have me and the magicians im taking got stage names, and I replied, is it really necessary to have stage names?

Can you imagine English people trying to call me Gochos the Greek? Gochos the Greek and associates will be walking around and performing magic. I don’t know, it personally doesn’t sound right, no matter what stage name you have.

Then again, I suppose what the function is, if it’s a Kids party maybe its ideal, maybe a mental show, or comedy act. But if you are doing corporate work and close up, I personally think your normal name rather than a fabricated persona is ideal.

Imagine giving the performance of your life, you give out as many business cards as you can get rid of and a few days later the phone rings. Your wife, mother, kids etc. picks up the phone and hears ' is Clarke Kent there'?

Sorry, never heard of him and the phone gets put down. I'm sure it happens.

Anyway, use your real name! Someone probably thought long and hard in giving that name to you. If my kids, with their 10 second attention span picked up the phone and someone asked to speak to anyone but 'Dave - or your dad' then they would get the same reply as above.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
