I recently tried to get work at the Hamleys magic stall and brought '50 greatest magic trick's' to make a demo. One thing that really annoyed me about the kit was that it included a svengali deck that said '50 greatest magic trick's' on the box. How is any kid going to convince his friends that it's a normal pack?

By using the initiative that great magi have and switching the box for a bike one. I know the back design won't look right but to be honest, it is designed for kids/absolute beginners. I still use a TT that I got in an old margin set! It works wonders! Let us know if you get the job, I'll pop in and introduce myself. :D

I use loads of Marvins Magic stuff to keep with me when traveling or just at family affairs its a great way to keep people intrested in magic. helps make breed of new magicians so in a way its godd that marvins does not make it way to easy. They are tricks which you need time to master.

The coins are amazing and fools everyone the more you practice to more deceptive they become by building your routine.

I think Marvins does a great job.

But thats the contradiction that bugs me. They're not selling magic to magicians, they're selling toys to kids (at quite a high price). When I put together my routine I had to make sure that it included no slight of hand. A D/L would have been to much, hell a riffle force would have been to much. Theres nothing wrong with selling this stuff to kids rather than a book, because these are meant to be toys that do the magic for you. The kids who buy this aren't going to have the skill or knowledge to work around the box their cards are in so they've been sold a faulty product.

Cheers but this was awhile ago, I didn't get it. I knew it was a bad idea to where my 'Proud Pedophile' T-shirt.

So do I, but as a supplier of magic toys. They have magic tricks their you can sell to two year olds. I like the coins as well, and they're perfect for kids.

Actually what first got me into magic was my mother bought me a marvins magic "secret box of close-up magic" when i was about 8 or 9 i believe (she insists i was older but im sure i was that young!) from QVC - i spent absolutely hours showing all my friends the floating match above the card trick, however things like the match box which actually is stated in the leaflet "was specially designed to look real" is so obviously not that i could never get away with it and would constantly be told "...thats plastic... matches dont come in plastic boxes"

So all in all, some of the tricks are "cute" and can be built on but nowadays even children are more perceptive and tell it like it is ;)

When I pass by Hamley's I always pop in and see if there is anything new happening...which there isn't - and always want to tell the young crowd (with their parents) that they would get more choice and pay less money by popping into Davenports.

I think even children soon outgrow Marvins Magic.

Or they're selling tricks to future magicians

Many a good magician started with a magic set and while for most the novelty will soon wear off, for a few this will be the start of a lifelong obsession.

I do see your point though

I don't know if this guy has changed his prices. He claims to be the cheapest seller online but a quick search on ebay and you see he is actually the most expensive.

Marvins do a great job promoting magic, but I always wonder who though up the idea of the plastic match box. I recently used the magic colouring book with a group of young children and they loved it.

Absolutely, I'm pretty sure I started with a marvins magic set and I'm sure most other magicians did too. But I think thats more to do with the fact that most kids will get a magic set at some point and some of them will then develop an interest.
I wasn't even the one who originaly said they're selling toys to kids not magic to magicians, it was the guy interviewing me for the job who said it. I asked what should I do if someone asked me for a magic set for a four year old. They told me marvins most popular item was suitable for two year olds. marvins magic board
None of this is a criticism that would be like firemen criticising toy fire trucks.
