I have been a card man since I started magic however I now wish to walk down the royal road to mind reading however I'm not sure where exactly to start.

I am not an absolute beginner to mentalism because I do it for most of my stage routine but I need something for the close up and walk around situations. I would prefer things without cards.

So you very helpful and knowledgeable people what would be the BEST material for very clean, very strong close up mentalism?

P.s. I am already making my way through the wonderful Peek Performances - even though i feel a little out of my depth seeing as he references a lot of other material I have no idea about - so there is no need to recommend it.

What sort of abilities (yours or theirs) do you want to demonstrate?

First, do you mean mentalism, or mental magic?
Do you wish to use props, or not?
I have seen incredible reactions to walkaround/close-up mentalism with nothing (?) but "say a word please", pocket-writing and a business card.
Many people will suggest "13 Steps", but I never got on with it.

I would like to demonstrate my abilities as a reader of their minds mainly however making it seem like they can read minds would never be a bad thing.

Defiantly mentalism rather than mental magic.

As little 'Visible compromise' just in case you don't know the term cos i've only come across it once and example would instead of getting someone to pick a word in a book just have them think of it.

Just as minimal props as possible and nothing that seems weird. Either way I just want some strong close up mentalism. Most of what i've seen like bob cassidy and stuff is very stage orientated. Yeah I never really got along with 13 steps either.

I have brought Naked Mentalism I think it's a wonderful book and a very good demonstration of not compromising visibly however due to the method I feel like I need more sure fire mind reading demonstrations to go along with it. Thank you though

I would like to learn cold reading however I have heard that Ian's Full Facts of Cold Reading isn't for a beginner would you have an recommendations?

Also I am a big fan on Luke Jermay but most of the stuff I've got of his are either card based or for the stage. However I saw Emotional Intelligence and just wondered if it is worth a buy?

All of them are quite new. Craig also mentioned Tradecraft, which is still available (but not sure that's where you should start). Herb Dewey's stuff is hard to find in this country (or at least I didn't succeed a few years back).

Strictly, cold reading is telling people things about themselves "cold" (without any prior knowledge). However, many people seem to want to be able to do this straight off the bat, like Sherlock Holmes or Patrick Jane. In fact, the term encompasses reading systems like the Tarot and these methods can be a great way to get into the concept. However, I get the impression these might not be quite what you want.

I started with ocommercial cold reading by richard webster. I had a easy time following it and found it to be very informative. Wonder words is also a great supplument to cold reading I think. Those are just my thoughts. There are others here in TM that are far more verused in the medium then I

The sort of cold reading I'm looking for is in a mentalism contest a good example is in an effect called 'cold emotion' someone thinks of an emotion - after secretly figuring it out - then you cold read about what sort of situation they were in when experiencing that emotion. This sort of thing is what I would use cold reading for.
