Tomo - could you have a glass dome over the unit that fits into the base. This would enhance the steampunk look and also give the impression that it is beyond human interference (and it'd look a bit scientific and important like).

Also, if you wish to go move to a more Steampunk looking object; could you not move the entire workings into a clock instead? For whom the bell tolls and so forth? So it moves, strikes and maybe even be set remotely to certain time?

You have to remember that his is a private commission, made to order. I love the idea of going full metal steampunk, though.
