Quick Report on Last Night

Postby GoldFish » May 24th, '05, 14:05

Last night was my audition for Middlesborough Circle of Magicians. I arrived at about 7.00 and by 7.15 the comitee and myself sat around a table and my interview began. That went fine, with all the usual questions about my interest in magic, why Middlesborough Circle, etc. All of the comitee were very nice and there was no pressure, they just wanted to know the answers to my questions.

Then came the regular comitee business meeting which lasted a few minutes. After that it was my turn to perform and I stood up to a polite round of applause which was really nice and did help to set my nerves at ease slightly. The audition didn't go quite aswell as I had hoped as I missed a big chunk out of the begining. I had also chosen the President as my assistant and he burned my hands something rotten :P. So I was a little put off by those two things but i got through my Ace Twisting effect fine, mucked up the Invisible Palm half way through and had to cut it short but finished with my version of Dr Daley's Last Trick. As I held my hand over the cards to make them "change" it was visibly shaking and that hasn't happened to me for a long time. So overall the actual audition didn't go anything like what I wanted it to and it was actually several minutes short. It left me wishing I'd done my Cups and Balls routine, but nevermind, its all in the past now.

We then had the rest of the meeting, which was highly enjoyable and it was nice to see how a Circle meeting is structured, even though apparently last night was a special evening.

In the bar afterwards I had a really good conversation with a fellow Magi. We sat, had a drink and genereally chatted whilst we waited or the comittee to reach a verdict on my membership. Sitting there chatting away, reminded me exactly why I wanted to be a member of a Circle or Society in the first place. I'd just like to say a big thanks to the Circle for making me feel so welcome.

Officially I should wait until I recieve Official conformation but luckily I was getting a lift from the Club Secretary so I found out on the way home! I was graciously accepted into the Middlesborough Circle of Magicians.

Now all I have to do is nail this job tonight and I can really celebrate! :)

All the best,

Will Wood

Congratulations on your news!

There will be no helping you & stopping you now.

You have made the right decision joining a club/society you will get help & guidance from other members, that I can tell you from experience.

I saw Derren Brown perform in Ipswich last night (fantastic show by the way) and I was watching every move etc closely, its something that us magicians cant help but do, so dont be put off by that.

I am sure your ability was noticed & also your keeness, thats what magic clubs etc are all about, otherwise the art would not carry on.

Well done again

Cheers

Well done Will, although i would have been extremely surprised if you hadn't got in...

Possibly the worse audience you will ever face...

Well done and I must say that this is a really interesting post that describes very well the membership process for magic clubs and societies in general.

I'm sure that having read your post, many more will now hopefully consider joining their local society and realise that it's not as daunting as they perhaps first thought.

Very well done Will, Sorry I forgot to log in again...... :(

I think it took a lot of guts to perform in front of the club members, especially it being your first time.....and as has been said, your report can only encourage others to do the same....

I personally think it's a good thing to join a club as the help and support of the other members is invaluable!

Also most clubs have a library that you can browse through and get a look at some of the books before you buy either them or not as the case may be...! :)
