Tips For Beginners

Postby craig1985 » May 8th, '11, 16:32

I have decided to start this thread to hopefully help out some of the newer magicians. As always, all comments are appreciated and if you too have anything to share then please do so. This may end up pretty long so please bare with me or bookmark the page and return later when you have more time.

Practice really does make perfect!

Whilst beginning out in magic you will hear the term "Practice, Practice, Practice" many times in your journey. In reality that term could be repeated hundreds time over as it really is true. Without lots of practice you won't be able to polish the tricks to the high standards you see from your favourite magicians. You should be able to do the trick blindfolded and still be confident that you can get it right every time. The last thing you want to happen is to forget what you are supposed to do half way through performing the trick. Another thing is to practice how you can lead one trick straight in to another in such a way as to look as natural as possible.

Misdirection

The art of misdirection is one of the most important things that you need to master. This involves being able to control everything within your act including your audience. If you are doing a switch in one hand you need to divert the audiences' attention so they never see the switch happen and believe something really magical has just happened right in front of their eyes. There are many ways that magicians use misdirection in their performances so it is about finding what works best in your act and using that to your advantage. This will be covered more in depth in a later article but for some examples, if you are a comedy act then you could use some sort of humour or even some simple hand gestures can do the trick for you. The timing of your misdirection is also critical, you don't want to misdirect the audience and THEN make the switch, both need to be done at the same time.

Remember, things can go wrong!!

At some time in your journey through magic, there may be times when part of your routine does not go exactly as planned. This needs to be thought out beforehand as to how you are going to react to these times. I personally just make light of the situation, we ARE human after all.

I hope you have enjoyed this post and please leave comments and add anything you think may help others through their journey.

Thanks

I was wondering what you were talking about and thought his post may have been edited, then I clicked the link.
Craig, I suspect the link to your site may have to be removed, this forum does not support exposure - especially of marketed effects. While were on the subject of your site :) If I were you Id remove the video at the bottom of the page, its terrible.

Not getting into the exposure issue, the thread's a nice idea but we've all ready got the getting started and little tips threads which do pretty much the same job.
