Surrounded mentalism

Postby Beardy » May 11th, '11, 16:10

Just been informed the performance I'm doing tonight is "in-the-round". Now that completely changes my set!

This should certainly be interesting! Never done this before...exciting times!

i have to say, I was thinking the same thing as Craig.
Every time you do a close up piece of mentalism, you do it "surrounded"
Look at the work of Ted Lesley. Thats all caberet, which is by nature in the round.

its just a question of audience management, and communication.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

It might be about the way it's presented (i.e. making sure everyone is talked to etc) and the effects he's doing?

I've not seen much stage mentalism but I'm pretty sure Derren Brown wouldn't like the audience to be behind him for a couple of effects he has done. (the bank note one springs to mind)

It's more the fact that half the people wouldn't be able to see. Regardless of the fact that it's 'all in the mind', I doubt they would have been impressed if my back was too them the entire time!

ah.. but they can hear. you have to spread the line of sight around a bit.
Think of it in the same way you would if you were performing in a large theatre, where the back row are just too far away to see everything in detail.
you cover this, by naming symbols, and getting things repeated. also you use the helping spectators eyes and reactions, to put the over all effect over to everybody.

just remember to aknolwedge their presence now and again, by adressing them. This way they dont feel left out, and dont get frustrated bored.
And remember, you can split the audience in half, (in your head) and use dual reality on each half, rather than on one person against the other. It can be quite an interesting situation.
avoid using an easle, and where ever possible use a large sheet of cardboard, or pad which you can hold. this removes a static wall.

Pfffft. I went propless and wrote an entire new show. Best reaction for a long while, including a couple of girls afterwards ;)

Currently just preparing for another gig. Very exciting - one of the routines I'm doing is brand new. Stage again, just the way I like it. No cabaret here!

Let's just say I'm king of PK Touches - look up my 'Bang' video and you'll see one of the things I did - I have a 20 minute PK Touch routine :)

May I ask if the methodology is different from D'Angelo's Invisible Hand?

Yes it is. To my knowledge, it is my own creation. I haven't seen this effect anywhere else, and I've had my first 'bang' video on YouTube for over a year now. It can be done both inside and outside, though my presentation inside on stage is my own secret at this point in time.

I don't want to give anything away, but Is that the trick that uses the trained d*ve with the full bl*dder?

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Had a lovely one last night...100 people in the round, in an octagon shaped restaurant overlooking Vienna...nice!
