New Business Card Design, Criticism, please?

Postby Danny Joseph » May 22nd, '11, 15:51

Hey all :)

I designed a business card while at college quite some time ago, but I didn't realize the files we're wiped at end of term.

So I have just spent the last hour designing the front of a new one and am just looking for some constructive advice, also does anyone have any ideas for the back? as I'm a little lost.

Thanks allot :)
Danny.

I think on the front you must have contact details - phone number, email and website. Ithink the back should be blank.

I think he didn't include contact details here because he didn't want to post them online.

I agree with keeping the back blank, you might also want a picture of yourself on the front.

What style of magic do you do?

I do close-up card magic :)

And I didn't add contact as I was originally going to add it to the back, but I'm currently adding it to the front ( just saving and uploading as we speak ) so hopefully we can see what everyone thinks.

As for a picture, I plan to give business cards out personally ( like at end of performances), rather than the cards being randomly placed, so would you still suggest a photograph? I don't personally think I photo too well anyway.

Thanks again for advice :)

Neither do I, so you should get a pro to take your picture, I've never looked as good in real life as I do in my business card.

I do think a picture is a good idea, people remember faces better than names. Also when I asked what style of magic do you do, I meant serious, light harted, comedy, scary etc.

I really like it

I'd say put your contact details on the back. I'd keep the front as you've got it, I don't think you should add anything else to that side (brings more attention to you, not how to get in touch)

I'd have the back similar to the front, with your contact details. But will that be too boring? Maybe a photo (without a background) might help make it look more interesting

You might want to read the documentation that the printers give you, as well. Make sure you use the right kind of black (there's a right kind of black and a wrong kind of black), you're not using too much black, and you have the margins right. I think there's a couple of people around here who can help you with that kind of thing too

Edit: I'd normally agree with keeping the back blank, but I think in this case you don't need to. The reasons for keeping the back blank is usually so people can write things about you (or you can use it for mentalism tricks), but you do card tricks so what else can they write except "Did a rather fine DL"?

Ah ok :) Style wise then I am cheeky / comedic ( but still smart and presentable ) :)##

Edit: It's good to have different opinions, some like the blank idea, some like the details on front etc.

I should have the picture with the details on the front uploaded soon.. photobucket isn't loading for some reason at the second.

I'm a little un-sure budget wise for professional photos, but I can always research. :)

I can recommend imgur.com for photo hosting, they're pretty reliable.

It's ok it's back up :)

Here's the image:

I increased the bloom effect too. Also I hope to incorporate a email system into the website, so I did not see adding a e-mail address as neccersary. ( plus 3 lines was quite over-welming )

I'm actually pretty happy with this, would glady like to see a healthy pile of these on my desk :) ( keeping background blank )

So many people have the internet these days that I think it would better to add a photo onto the website

What does everyone else thing however? :)

Hi Danny,

I think the fron t of the card should have all of your details on, website, phone number and e-mail address. Not too sure about the mobile number as it is looks a little like an international number personally I think 07851 100047 would be better. As for the back, some people like to keep blank for certain effects, why not have some blank and some with a design.

Put your email address on it: not everyone can or will visit your website, and those who can, may not realise you can use it to email you

The number should technically be 07xxx xxx xxx - but then again I don't use that pattern for my own number, because I'm silly

Just don't use have the whole number without spaces. That's just irritating :p

(Also, you've gone over the safe area for bleeding there, so you'll have to look into that further)

Much better with contact details on the front IMHO,
Agree with Kolm, e-mail add too. People are shy.

It looks very nice from the front. I would advise that you consider downsizing the reflection of the letters in the 'water', but it might look better on the small card, than it is on my screen.

As others said, you should also add your e-mail on the front of the card.

As for the back, I would recommend printing something interesting there, that would encourage people to keep the card with them. I have a mentalism trick on the back of my card, which I can show to potential clients, give them a basic explanation on forcing, and then giving them a few extra cards so that they can try the trick on all their friends (and spread the fame).

Wow lots of opinions, thank you! :)

Ok, so the preview below is to a 1:1 scale so the size on your screen is 90 x 50mm.

The reflection has been toned down by about 10%

I rearranged the numbers slightly, and have only just seen the issue about the bleeding, I did think about that but I thought it was safe, but I can correct that :)

Email Address has been added :)

The Back As for the back, I thought maybe leaving it blank black, buying some white pens and do a mind reading & prediction, which may also be a good way to casually pass on my card :)

edit: I moved the text to where it should hopefully be bleed-safe :)

Magician AND entertainer? Rather suggests that magic isn't entertaining! Or do you do other non magic entertaining? Otherwise looks good!
