Magical Rings

Postby Ricky Gibson » May 30th, '11, 01:06

Hello everyone,

I have done some looking around for a DVD or book on a collection of different ring effects, by this I mean magic effects done with an every day finger ring. Saldy, I havn't been all that successful in my search, although I have found some very good effects, but are marketed as a single effect (maybe with a few bonuses),

Such as the "Ring Thing" by Garret Thomas, also he has a very good gimmicked effect which I'm sure you're all aware of, called "Banded". Although, I have found "Transit" by Calen Morelli (which is similar but done with a rubber band) to be more cost effective.

So more to the point, does anyone know of any books or DVDs which would have a collection of magic effects or routines with a finger ring?

After seeing him on last year's EMC, I would guess you might want to look in De'vos direction and "De' Ring". Trailer looks vaguely promising, but I fundamentally know little about rings...

De'ring is mostly flourishes, but MAN, they are good ones. The Gryphon Roll (as seen in The Presitige) alone is almost worth the price of the DVD.

Because rings share a lot of properties with coins, I'm sure with a little creativity you can modify coin moves for rings.

Currently Reading "House of Mystery" (Abbott, Teller), Tarbell, Everything I can on busking

De'ring = amazing. One of the best DVDs that I own.

Hey everyone,

I've taken a look at the trailer and very impressed, with incorperating coin palms and those flourishes, I think I can come up with some very nice routines.

Also, I did some more searching and found out about this DVD: "Finger Ring Magic (Worlds Greatest Magic)", then I found a review of the DVD in this forum and it looks promising, also someone on the same thread mentioned about "Ring Leader" by Gregory Wilson. The review can be found here: http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic17099.php

Thank you all for your replies, I'm going to have so much fun with these :).

Hi Ricky,

Have you had a look at Ninja+ by Mathew Garrett, he used this as part of his Magic circle close up magician of the year last year, which he won.

Thank you deano,

I have looked it up, watched the routine on youtube and I love it, actually I bought it from merchants of magic yesterday, while their 20% offer was on. I love when he unlinks the finger ring off onto his finger, looking forward to its arrival.

Thank you again, really appreciate all your posts, all have been so much help.

I'm sure I will Deano :)

After you said you've known him for about 7 years i got curious, so I looked him up and checked out his website, then looked him up on youtube and saw the video of him performing at the Magic Circle's Close-Up Magician of the Year 2010.

I think the first thing that I noticed about him is that he is very charismatic, you can tell he is passionate about magic and definitely enjoys it, his perfomances have a great flow to them and his is patter fluent. Very professional, I bet he is popular :)

Very impressed, glad I'm giving his dues by buying his Ninja+ effect and look forward to working it into my Finger ring routine.

Wow, that is very unique mobi, atleast to me, i've not seen anything like it.

I have already thought up a few uses for it in my routines, it would be a very nice finish to a routine with a spectators ring, also a nice clean finish for a routine with my own ring, especially if I am using a gimmicked ring, great way to switch a ring, also could be a way to make it disappear and reappear on the Ninja+.

Thank you mob, Although for £135 I was able to purchase Ninja+ props & dvd, finger ring magic, ring thing, de'ring, ring leader and banded, so to me £90 - £135 is, although fair, pretty pricey, that said, it is something i'll be saving for definiely.

Thank you Yano, I took a look at the trailer of his dvd on youtube (looks like he was perforiming in birmingham city centre?), I liked the material on the trailer and had a look at the dvd content on the wizard fx website.

it's all great stuff which i can use, I'm sure Ring finger (on the dvd) and banded (by Garrett Thomas) would work very well together, Smoke finger is a vey nice introduction to a routine involving a spectators ring etc, tons of uses, great stuff. The price is modest too, 19.99, hard to refuse (atleast for me)

and Lady of Mystery, I actually bought the DVD you're talking about a couple days ago, you're right to recommend it, loved the content. I was pretty shocked when Jay Sankey asked a spectator if he was retarded during his routine, that ruined the performance for me straight away but the routine and effect itself is useful non the less.

Thank you all again for your replies, you have all been very helpful. Also, if anyone comes across anymore, i'd love to know about them :)
