Coming This Week - Creating Hybrid Image Illusions in GIMP

Postby Tomo » Jun 6th, '11, 14:51

I don't normally trail new ebooks but I'm really excited about this one. Creating Hybrid Image Illusions in GIMP takes you through the process of creating a new form of illusion that can be used to create dual reality effects, forces that involve two people seeing different words on the same piece of paper, and so on.

Here's an example:

Image

It clearly says TREAT in ghostly writing. Now step away from the computer screen a few metres and look again. Weird, or what?

Based on work done at MIT in the 1990s, hybrid images are a completely new class of illusion. They're not simply two images overlaid.

What could you do with the ability to create your own hybrid images? Amazing things, that's what. In this upcoming ebook, I explain the full process of creating your own hybrid images using free, open source software. That's right, FREE!

That's genuinely the strongest implementation of this technique I've ever seen.

Evil temptation to put potty mouth words on t-shirts...

then the only thing left is the method.

Excellent idea everyone, especially about dirty t-shirt slogans. "But, officer, look again..."

I bet people are trying to download and blow up the sample image above to use for free

Wow. I'm already writing a hundred routines in my head. That's just brilliant.

When's the book out. There's a chance I might be buying this ...

EDIT - I've just re-read the subject line of this post ... ignore my silly silly question.

Wowwee! This would be great for a suggestion/mind control thing, with somebody being brought up blingfolded, a card being turned around that the audience think says,,, perhaps, hello, but the subject is certain says goodbye, due to your influence. Or the old "your card" gag, made into powerful magic! :D

Tom Stone has a great application for this in his ebook "Moonshine Monologues"

Time Magazines Person Of The Year 2006.

Brilliant, Tomo. I see so many uses for this - especially for really striking posters.

It might also be useful on a business card.

That reminds me of the Jekyll/Hyde illusion. http://www.grand-illusions.com/opticali ... _and_calm/

I just wondered Tomo does that effect still work in a printed form or is it just on screen?

Yup, hybrid images work just as well when printed off.

I love the way that page says: "This is based on work by Dr Aude Oliva (MIT) and Dr Philippe Schyns (University of Glasgow)." It IS the work of Dr Aude Oliva (MIT) and Dr Philippe Schyns. It's lifted wholesale form their 2006 paper!!!
