If you are interested in mentalism then there are many good texts such as '13 steps'.

For paranormal entertainment there are books by Paul Voodini (magicwand here), Lord Freddie and myself.

Reader of minds and the paranormal entertainer by Paul Voodini will give you a good start in this area. I use his material in my shows.

Have a look here at the document Craig Browning put together on Mentalism : http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic11429-0.php.

Also I'll second the recommendations, anything by Paul Voodini, Lord Freddie or Stephen Ward are definitely worth a read, all three have done this for a living and have priceless advice they pass on in their work.

Annemann's - Practical Mental Magic is also a good companion for 13 Steps.

Max Maven - PRISM was a fantastic introduction in to more modern mentalism techniques for me.

Get yourself a copy of Karl Fulves' Self Working Mental Magic. It's a really good book to get you started with. Goes over many of the basics and is so easy to follow :)

In that I'm not part of the Politically Favored on TM folks tend to forget that I have two FREE books that cover both, Mentalism and Cold Reading that can be found here -- http://stores.lulu.com/nimetonmagicandpublishing both books offer a rather extensive list of resources that aren't part of the single forum fan base we seem to find plugged here at a constant level vs. any reference to older, more universally well known resources.

Yes, I'm being pithy but I simply loathe the political games being played on this forum and the unofficial sense of "black ball" that happens when it comes to the Stickies I've got on this (and many other sites) that were once heralded along with any and all of my writings. . . guess I gave away way too much rather than making folks pay for it :?

I only started a couple of months ago and from this forum's recommendations I bought:

Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism
Annemann's Practical Mental Magic
Fulves' Self Working Mental Magic

I don't read them every day but I'm slowly making progress and I'm getting so much out of them. I've focused mainly on Corinda though. I didn't really enjoy Fulves' book but that's just because I've never been a fan of self-working tricks as I find them often far too obvious but others disagree so maybe I just over-think these things.

My one piece of newbie advice is don't do what I did and start skimming ahead thinking "yeah, whatever. But when do I learn the REAL magic!?" I was one of these people who used to think "I know Derren Brown says he's not really magical but..... he has to be!!"

Just something else worth bearing in mind. There are many fantastic works of mentalism that are available to buy, however you could make an entire career out of the contents of just one of the many books mentioned.

After spending lots of time buying several books and fortunately very few gimmicks, it has only recently dawned on me that I have everything I realistically need and try and buy things to compliment the dozen or so effects I am now concentrating on perfecting.

Or things just because I cannot help myself but that is just CUPS. :D
