Marketing a trick?

Postby Danny Joseph » Jul 16th, '11, 03:24

Hey forum,

I was wondering how one would go about bringing a new trick to a market, it is a close-up trick.

The effect is that there are two pint glasses on top of a transparent glass table, the first is completely full, the second is completely empty.

As the spectators watch, the liquid begins to disappear ( liquid-level lowers, as if being drunk through a straw ) until it is empty, simultaneously, the empty glass fulls up with liquid.

The glasses are picked up and shown to be normal, obviously there are no hidden gimmicks as it's performed on the glass table.

So I've designed the effect and am commencing buying supplies this monday, but am wondering, if I should so decide, how would I go about marketing something like this?

Does the transparent glass table come packaged with it?

Sounds good, only thought is that this is more stage/parlour rather than close-up isn't it? On a practical level I wouldn't want to carry two pint glasses around with me all night when doing close-up at a party/wedding/restaurant just to do this one quick routine. Would also be interested to know how often you've performed this and what reactions it got. Thanks!

It is certainly an interesting concept. Please let us know if you do release it. :D

Do you mean "marketing" a trick, or "selling" it - there are differences?
I assume you mean selling..
Either way, contact a dealer.

Are you going to make the trick yourself (or get someone to do it for you) - If so you can approach a variety of Dealers to try and persuade them to stock it or you could just try and sell them to someone like Murphy's who will wholesale it for you.

If it is just an idea and you want to get someone else to manufacture, market and sell then approach one of the dealers whose range it would fit into.

The first thing that should be done before thinking about marketing an effect is research, ie has the effect been done before, if so what method is used, who came up with the concept etc.
In this case the effect you describe has been done before and is available, it uses glass tumblers rather than pint glasses. Unfotunetely I cant remember the actual name of the effect so cant find it to provide a link. I did come across it for sale on a magic site some time ago though. Paul Zennon used it on one of his specials aswell - but instead of the glasses being side by side he had one on top of the other with a beer mat in between, so that the effect was a penetration.

I know I'm kind of hi-jacking this thread, and no dout in a little while I will also be starting a thread of my own, but how about marketing a pdf download? Does anyone know anything about that?

Bingo, and I too can't remember the name because I think it has many. It may be old enough that it is no longer protected. If memory serves me right the instructions may be in the Tarbel course somewhere, but I can't say that for sure.
