I know this is going to sound snarky as all heck but if you want to improve on the Linking Ring routine only use two rings. Three if you absolutly cannot contain yourself.
Lots and lots of audience participation is also a good idea especially for linking rings.
Watching somebody link and unlink 7 rings and then turn them into all kinds of patterns is just boring. But, that is just me and my tainted views.
Also the never ending dancing cane routine...boring
Zombie more that a moment or three, (unless you are Jeff McBride)...boring
Dove magic, after the first three doves...boring
Ambitious Card after the first three times....boring
Manipulation...don't even get me started.
The only exceptions to this is when the performance is good theatrical performance. There is a story that is engaging to the audience so the focus is not the 25th time the ball multiplies. That is only a means to an end.
McBride has a whole battle between good and evil going on, dance, martial arts and kabooki (sorry I can't spell Kabooki) theatre is going on.
Cardini was a drunk, and we were seeing the world through the eyes of a drunk, with things quickly moving beyond his ability to keep up.
Norm Neilson was an acception to the rule. His act was a representation of magic. It was performed flawlessly and with great care and showed off the shomanship of a magician. The entire act was only 8 minutes long! Think about it.
