Was this card trick popular at school?

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

It was not necessary that she would have gotten it in one go had you performed it differently. The fact of the matter is people are really fooled by the presentation of a magic trick, rather than the method.

I completely agree with everything you said. The reason I started the thread was because I didn't entirely baffle her, I wanted to know why. So I had two theories. It was either me or by chance she just happened to know a card trick that's not very common. As this thread has revealed - everyone knows the trick. So it was me. :D I learn!

To be fair, it was both. The good news is that this is how we learn. Practice, rehearse, perform, question.

Just in case I haven't raved about this book enough, Christian Chelman's Capricornian Tales has a brilliant use for this technique using tarot cards. The first time I used it in a real world setting one of the participants told me 'I didn't think tarot cards were magic, now I'm not so sure.'
It changed the way I view magic. I no longer want to be an entertainer, now I just want to start my own cult.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Oh god this effect is just boring as hell. My friend did it to me a couple of times over the years and each time it got even duller. I honestly don't know why he kept thinking it was a good idea and I only let him do it because I've known him for years.

The other one to look out for is the '52 card pickup' trick.
Usually attempted by drunks in pubs.

They take your pack, throw the cards in the air so they fall all over the place then walk away.

I only fell for that one once :(

Well I'm in the U.S. and I think I remember a relative teaching me this trick as a young child. As far as I know this relative didn't know much about magic at all. Not sure what that says, but I hope it might help you.

Funnily enough, I was watching the film Fatal Attraction last night and the kid in it performs the trick for his dad (Michael Douglas).

So is it the same for all of you that when someone says "hey, I know a trick" and starts to go into this, you just think bless them for trying?

i find it easier to pretend i don't know it and let them have their 5 seconds of glory....makes them feel better about their special little selves :P

If you wanted to be really mean to them, after they've finished doing it, you could say "wow, so explain how that's done?" then watch the cogs behind their eyes start grinding and wait for the little puff of smoke to come out the ears.
