Hello

Hi,

My name is Iain and I'm 33. I have loved magic all my life but each time I have tried myself I have suffered due to having not very dextorous hands.

I want have decided to try again but would like some advice on what would be good starting reading material and if there are area's that do not require that nimble fingers, to give you an idea even a basic shuffle gives me problems.

I am not looking at this as a career, I just want to be able to enjoy it myself and maybe entertain a few friends down the pub.

Thanks

Iain

Welcome to Talk Magic. Many of us began by learning from The Royal Road To Card Magic and Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. Both are very good books and will serve you well. There are some good books on self working card tricks if that is the kind of thing you want to do. The Karl Fulve's Self working card trick books are good. If you did want to do simple but strong card magic then maybe the Michael Ammar Easy to master card tricks DVD series may interest you.

The Micheal Ammar DVD sets are amazing - you can get them either as the 9DVD set, or some sites do them as individual DVD's - after reading and going to Royal Road to Card magic, I went straight o the DVD's.

As for being dexterous (or not as you claim) you don't really need to be (well, not as much as you'll convince yourself that you need to be), the books mentioned go through step by step how to do each move, and with a little practice you'll just get used to holding the cards, coins etc in no time

    Welcome to TM

Thank you all for the nice welcome and suggestions.

I've ordered some of the books and a couple of packs of cards and will let you know how I get on.

    Thanks

    Iain

Not being much of a card magic peson, I can only speak from my own experience but not having dextrous hands isn't such a big problem. OK, sleights, flourishes and all the quick stuff need dexterity but misdirection/direction can be equally important - and reatively easier to develop! Self workers are a good way to build up a bit of confidence, try adapting them as much as you can get away with so the result isn't an obvious self worker or trick but a piece of magic which starts in your hands and concludes in the minds of the spectators.
