Prediction in the stars?

Postby jwardmagic » Jul 23rd, '11, 21:47

This might be a long shot. I am trying to work out how to create quite a large illusion style effect involving the stars in the night sky arranging themselves so they spell a prediction or word. Maybe not actually 'move' into place, but be fixed in a position subetetly spelling a word or prediction. The only ways I have thought of doing this was by linking a few 'chinese lanterns' together in the shape of the prediction and setting them off into the sky tied down with a fishing wire. Im not sure this would actualy work well though and they would probably burn out before they get high enough to look like a dot of light.

Any ideas? I won't be surprised if it sounds impossible.

Arrange a set of white LED fairy lights on a framework as high up in a tree as possible so, after dark, they could be mistaken for being in the sky. Just blank out the individual lights not required and leave those spelling out the prediction.

Something like Mandrake's idea, using LED, but maybe having them wired up on a fine wire frame and have them suspended between two points, if that was high enough, the dots might look right, and you shouldn't see the wires either. Although, I still think that most things you could use will still look like either chinese lanterns, LEDs or what ever else rather than stars unfortunatly. It would be a great finale though. Maybe look into finding someone who is involved with set design in theatres, they might know something.

OK, various different factors to take into consideration here.
Firstly, the source of light would need to be far away enough that whatever they are attached to is not visible to the naked eye when hit by either the LEDs or natural light, thi means that any lights used will have to be pretty bright in order to be seen from far away.
They would need to be firmly attached to a rigid frame to prevent elements from shifting them out of their positions, thus making the reveal unreadable.
The further away from your vantage point the item is, the higher off the ground it would have to be in order to be in your line of sight of the sky.
All in all, this sounds hideously expensive, though would also make a pretty good marriage proposal if it could be pulled off.

well.. Why dont you just force something, that is already up there?

you need to know in advance what constelations are up there when you are performing this. you could then prove the pointg further, by having an outline drawn on a clear plastic sheet, that joins the stars together and form what ever it is you have forced.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....
