Hey, from... the middle of nowhere!

Hey guys :-) Newbie on the block here. I've been into magic since I was little, and now I'm in my final year of uni, decided it's time I start learning. I'm working my way through The Royal Road To Card Magic (which is a brilliant book!) but would also like to learn some coin magic, especially impromptu stuff and coin in bottle tricks (which I have worked out my own method for, just require the right gimmicks). Could anyone recommend to me a suitable starting book, with enough scope for a lot of study?

Also, I want to be able to practise tricks with a friend, though I'm worried he'll work out how they're done should I be useless... Any ideas?

Lastly, I'd LOVE to attend magic shows in the Cambridge or Norwich area. Does anyone know of any such thing? I saw Derren Brown once but that's about it...

Anyway, hey, and thanks for your time! Apologies for the long message :P

Hi there, no need to apoligise for the long post. We appreciate an informative introduction.
The book Bobo's Modern Coin Magic will give you plenty to study on the coin side. This is considered a classic amongst magicians, and you'd be hard pushed to find a coin guy who hasnt studied it.
When you say you want to practice with a friend do you mean with the friend as a spectator, or are they practicing too ?
    Welcome to TM :)

Thanks for the reply guys! I actually did find this book, and it's a complete bargain if it is that good - I'll get straight on to ordering it, and will keep you posted as to progress. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, so I won't be buying many books at once. Not that I could afford them if I did want to...

My friend would be a spectator, although he'd like to pick up some tricks himself (possibly to impress the fairer sex). I'm scared of looking a fool, and giving away the secrets to tricks so maybe I should just use a mirror!

The other main area of magic I'm interested in is mentalism, though looking at other threads seems to suggest that this can wait until I've got a basic grounding in other areas (cards and coins, for now!)

Many thanks again

It is :) You'll be pleasantly surprised at the amount and quality of the material.
If your friend is interested in learning why dont you learn together ? You could help each other and he'll be more inclined to keep your secrets if/when he spots something if he's learning aswell.

Brilliant, I'm eagerly anticipating its arrival! :)

Yeah, I might ask him actually. I'm not sure how much he wants to really put into it, but it's worth a shot. Never know, could be the next Penn and Teller!

Thanks again for your advice

Paul

Welcome to TM! The Pentacle Club is in Cambridge so they might know of shows or events of interest - see http://www.ipswichmagicalsociety.co.uk/ ... elcome.htm for their details. Stacy aka The4thCircle is a member so she might be able to help you!
