East Africa Famine

I was performing table magic last night at one of my local pubs.
As you may know, I perform magic in pubs to collect money for a charity.

I was shocked to discover that very few people had even heard that there is a disaster unfolding in East Africa.

Please read the following (taken from the DEC appeal site) and see if you can find a way to help:-

Over 10 million people are at risk in East Africa due to conflict and some areas being affected by the worst drought in 60 years. The DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal will support the work of our members in affected areas of Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and South Sudan. Your donations can help provide life saving aid such as food, water, care for malnourished children and medical treatment.

The DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) http://www.dec.org.uk/item/507 comprises the following charities:-

Oxfam, Tearfund, Actionaid, WorldVision, British Red Cross, Cafod, Concern Worldwide, Christian Aid, Merlin, Save The Children, Age Uk, and Care International.

Many Thanks

I took the jar of pennies I've been saving into Oxfam a couple of weeks ago. The guy behind the counter looked like I'd just given him a dead cat. Tough! I have nearly filled a jar with 2p pieces. When it's full I'm going to give him that, too!

Way back in the early 1960's great publicity and appeals for donations were made by The Oxford Committee for Famine Relief for the droughts and serious lack of food in Africa - not long after they shortened their name to Oxfam - so it's not a new situation by any means. However, the estimated population of the United Kingdom on July 25th 2011 is just over 60,300.00 so if everyone gave just 2p each that would be over £12 million – even with reasonable expenses deducted that would be sufficient to make a good start at resolving this almost perennial situation.

Tomo, local corner shops are always looking for jars of pennies, because the bank charges them for change. So you could get it changed there, then donate it. My jar of pennies recently topped seventy eoro, which my local grocer was delighted to take.
