Hello,

I'm just a middle-aged gent who, I presume like many others, would dabble with card tricks and other basic magic as a youngster.

Many years on and I find myself with a rekindled interest in the cards along with a growing interest in mentalism - I suspect that more common media coverage is partly to blame...

...but also finding myself still amazed by a family friend (who I believe is a member of the magic circle) in the same way I was many years back, and having a desire to be able to amaze my daughter as she grows beyond the simplistic awe of having toys vanish and then re-appear from her ear (aged two).

I've bought Erdnase and The Royal Road and whilst struggling in my initial comprehension, I'm determined to study to a competent level - I don't intend to follow this as a career (I doubt my confidence would ever be at a high enough level) but I would like to be able to stay 'magical' to my daughter until she turns 18.

Obviously, I'd relish being able to perform on occasion for family and friends, and converse with (other) 'magicians' out of interest and curiosity.

I believe there is a local (Plymouth) Magic Circle, but I'm struggling to find any further details. The Devon circle is more prominent, but somewhat of a drive. I'm not entirely sure if I'm ready for such a meeting even if I were invited, but it would be nice to meet some other folk.

Anyway, I'd welcome any suggestions on direction. I've just downloaded Mr Browning's free publications from Hulu, and I have plenty of reading/study ahead of me.

M.

Hi and welcome! It sounds like you have a lot of reading but just to add to the list Mark Wilson's Encyclopedia of Magic (Reviewed and mentioned a lot of times elswhere here) is a superb investment - well worth putting on your wishlist for birthday, Christmas - any excuse at all!

Yup, various names and cover designs, hardback and paperback but Amazon seem to be doing a good deal - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mark-Wilsons-Co ... 511&sr=1-1

    Hi M,

I'm new here, too. It seems we're in the same boat in terms of where we're at.

    Good luck with your learning!

    Andrew

    Thanks for the welcome.

Mr Wilson's book is on order from Amazon, and I'm perusing a number of titles produced by esteemed members here.

Another book you may want to add to your collection, if you are interested in mentalism, is; 13 Steps To Mentalism.

Fantastic book for that area. Also, some good recomendations already.

    And welcome!

Thanks, and Yes, that one's on the list as being rather definitive - it seems eBay is the best place to pick it up (even new) - and I shall be sure to add it to my collection along with those from Mr Voodini.
