Face up bottom deal

Postby cc100 » Jul 22nd, '11, 20:42

Hello,

I'm trying to learn the 'Oil and Water' routine out of The Devil's Picturebook. I can nearly do it but I'm struggling with the bit at the end (where you deal one card from the top and one from the bottom to intertwine the cards). Does anybody know where I can learn this move in more detail?

Thanks, cc100

It's not really a slight as far as I know, you just deal and don't flash the back ones while using a similar movement. By the time you get to this, they really wont be looking for it. Just keep the patter flowing and it's easy for them to miss.

The reason I ask is because Derren says on the DVD his inspiration for the move came from Jerry Sadowitz, and he also said Lennart Green had a method of performing it.

Hey, I know I'm kind of hi-jacking this thread, but I don't think this warrents it's own. However it does have something to do with the devils picturebook dvd, and that face up bottom deal. I know that only people who have this dvd will understand this, but I was just playing about with an idea that is basicly combining two bits of two effects from the dvd. The set up for his out of this world, and the selection process that leads into the face up bottom deal. I hope people understand what I mean. Well, what I'm getting at is that the way the cards are for the selection is the same as for the set up for his out of this world, just with less cards. I am wondering if there was some way you could creat a kind of out of this world effect based on the selection part before the face up bottom deal.

It would work something like this. You spread the cards out face down, have the spectator touch 26 cards they think are the same number, you collect them up and creat two piles from the cards touched and the cards left. You then deal them out showing a pile of red and then the other pile of black. At this point you place one pile on top of the other and when you next spread them out face up, they are all interchanging.

Of course this is only a thought, I had a bit of a play with the idea but it's not anything more than that, an idea. I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this. Also, if this has been a little too exposing, please, contact me or a mod to have it taken away, I love the content of this dvd and wouldn't want it being exposed.

Thanks.

[EDIT]

I know it's late, but I actually couldn't get this idea out of my head. I actually think I've cracked it, however, I'm not totally sure. If anyone fancies hearing my idea let me know. BUT! I will only share this with people who own the devils picturebook, so there will be a secret question to prove you have the dvd.

It's a nice idea, but I'm not sure you would get away with doing the face up bottom deal with that many cards. Remember, the false count in the 'Oil and Water' routine is done on an off-beat. I think if you used it with 26 cards the spectators might suspect something, even if they aren't exactly sure what it is.

I think I've kind of got the hang of the move now, thanks for the help in the above comments.

Yeah perhaps, it was just a thought. I know Lennart Green has an effect that has a similar sort of thing, but with a good number more cards though so who knows. Well I did finally work out the machanics of it so I might have to give it a whirl at some point in the future.

Do you know where to find the Lennart Green version of it?

Well, I'm not sure of the name exactly, but I think it's something along the lines of the odd card. I am pretty sure it's on his new work, the master files, although I don't own this. However, I saw some older footage of this effect to, so that may mean it could be found somwhere on his Green magic series too.

I know you could find the performance online somewhere, it's the performances with a young Paul Wilson, and a strangly large sword in the background.

Thanks for that, best of luck with your routine. The best judge of a routine is the spectator, so maybe just try it out and see what reaction you get.
