Mobile phone apps

Postby kolm » Aug 7th, '11, 01:20

After being shown two tricks on mobile apps during tonight's manchester meet, I've been thinking

I'm far from being the best at sleight of hand and general knowledge of magic, but I can't help but think that the trick the various apps out there can be accomplished normally, using regular magic techniques, without the use of a phone

So I'm wondering, genuinely, can anyone name a mobile (iPhone, Android and the like) app that does a trick that can't otherwise be done?

I've never understood the point of a magic trick on a mobile phone. If someone did something that involved a phone, I think I'd just be thinking to myself, 'hmmmm must have some dodgey phone app'.

Does this interest you kolm?

I have some of Redford's stuff and I like it, I'm interested to know how practical this is and if it lives up to its' claims.

I gather it was me with the iphone apps.
The only one I can think of is the one where you get a text from a "friend" telling you the chosen card and colour.
Due to the nature oc the trick, dont think you could do it without an iphone.

Assuming they're practical and usable etc, those tricks sound pretty cool, Grimshaw. Has anyone here got them qnd can review them?

You were one, but it wasn't meant as a personal attack :)

It can be done, with the only app needed being the phone's normal SMS app (it can be done with a borrowed phone). I'm going to nail down a method and I'll do it for you at the next meet ;)

I performed this trick over the phone in an Indian restaurant last year. It's all a case of having someone prepped at the end of the phone waiting. I'm trying to remember what book it's in. :?

Some one put me out of my misery! 13 steps? It's a great trick to tie into other tricks. Anyone who wants to know the method, PM me.

I think it's in Karl Fulve's mentalism book

I found a review here:

I think the Prophesy Voice effect looked better, and this reviewer agrees that it is the better of the two. I may well invest in this. A full review will be forthcoming if indeed I do.

These mobile phone apps are stupid if you ask me. It's just for kids to play with. There's not any kind of trick involved with these things, it's just the little computer inside doing all the work. I don't go around showing people the "trick" of how I can access the internet on my computer, that's basicly what these things are, just a computer program. Silly little toys.

She's gonna love that!

The only iPhone app that I use is a non-magic "fake call" one suggested by Ravi. Works great with a force and the appropriate time delay. Some people still say "must be voice recognition" though...

I once had an old phone which were able to send these "instant messages", you would write your revelation as a normal SMS, but the instant message feature made it appear instantly on the screen, just as an Iphone does today, but this was several years ago. The best thing about this instant SMS thing was that it was nowhere to be found in the inbox afterwards.

I remember being at my friends high school party where I knew no one, and he knew most people and therefore had their phone numbrs. So I gave him my phone and told him which card I would force, and made him send the message as I held my hand over their phone.

I remember getting a lot of peoples phone nummbers that night

iforce is incredible, because done correctly the phone or in my case, ipod touch is never suspected. As the effect is not centered around the phone. I used to think everyone would think it was a techno thing but I was wrong. Another one that is really cheesy but people tend to love is the XRay thing. Spectator covers the selected card with their hand, pass the phone over it taking an x-ray and there under the bones is the selected card. And it can be repeated a few times if that is your want.
