First time busking

Postby sleightlycrazy » Aug 7th, '11, 03:27

I made about 55 dollars today busking in Harvard square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The wind, angles, and long periods of inactivity really forced me to rethink and adapt everything I was doing. I ended up relying most on my cup and ball routine, and found that using my ching ling foo paper tear was very difficult out on the streets. People were generally nice. Each performance was only 2-5 minutes long, but getting a dollar or two each time really added up. Overall, it was quite fun.

Nice, I've been trying my hand at busking for the last six months or so and have to say, am really enjoying it. I too, the first time I tried, went out with a huge amount of tricks while now I only use about 3 in a set, and have a couple more for special occasions. I have a rope routine, a card thing that uses an ID and a coin across routine. Nothing special really but they are well practised and since magic is fairly rare down here so barely anyone has seen any of before. On a good (great) day, I can make 40 (New Zealand) bucks an hour. Looking Forward to the rugby world cup!

I reckon if you wanted to do busking in Britain you'd need to perfect the appearing/disappearing umbrella trick.

So I went out for a second time today after the rain stopped here and found a very good location. The street painter who usually stays there was absent due to the rain, so I got heavy foot traffic. I organized my material a little better, scripted out my gestures, and raked in 90 dollars in 3.5 hours. I think the adrenaline might keep me from sleeping well tonight...
