Hi

I am having a dilema at the moment, just got into magic again a few weeks ago and have already spent a small fortune on books, DVD's, gimmicks, I actually have the David Jones 8 DVD set with all the props that I am working my way through

I am mainly into close up stuff btw, and obv purchased RRTCM and the Bobo coin book, am in the middle of the brilliantly written "Magic and Showmanship"

The problem I have is, I want to do some magic right NOW, now I do own a Svengali and ID, so with a bit of patter there is a ton of magic right there I guess

But then I keep looking at s*** coins, the R***n, coin unique etc

And advice please?

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...

Whatever we say you will keep on buying stuff - it's just the way it is! Every magician has a pile of stuff they bought in the "early days" that never gets used. Just try not to go too mad and just perform a trick or two when out with your mates, remember it's about entertaining and amazing people, leave them wanting more and don't become a magic bore. Good luck! :D

oh i wasted my fair share of pocket money back in the day.... lol
the problem with buying new DVD's and books like they're going out of fashion is that you lose focus on the old stuff.... thus diverting your attention to the new material that then gets replaced with a new DVD.... bit of a vicious cycle really!!

your frustration is understandable, watching these DVDs and seeing the professionals out and about, performing, getting the reactions that YOU want can give you the itch to get out there and start yourself.....however it is better to be patient, you need to get the routines down perfectly before taking them into the real word

Quit buying and go out and start doing. Even if it is simple self-working tricks or gimmicked decks, go out and do magic. You are not a magician when you are studying tricks. You are only a magician when you are out doing magic.

I think all newbies should be advised NEVER to buy the raven. I would have been better taking my money and eating it, waiting for it to come out the other end and then rubbing it all over the walls.

Never a truer word spoken.
Decide on a few, practice a lot, perform endlessly.
It may not be the correct choice of act or trick, but you will never develop anything except frustration if you just keep purchasing new things, or more things.

Work on a couple solidly and perfect those two, once you have them down so that you could do them in your sleep, go out and perform them, then focus on learning a few more. It's easy to rush at first as there are so many things you want to learn but you want to be able to do a few things well rather than loads badly.

Thanks for some solid advice there guys

People at work are gagging to see some magic after seeing me read books, so already have a small, friendly audience to start with!

Bear in mind that you are in control of when, where and what you perform. Enthusiastic audiences are great but don't let them rush you into performing before you're ready or doing stuff you're not fully ready to show - keep 'em wanting more! Eugene Berger usually states right at the outset that he has just three things to show and that way everyone knows the agenda and are aware of when the presentation is completed.

Stop. Just stop everything. Put down the books, all the new props and gimmicks and walk away from it all. Grab your ID and perhaps two others that you like and go out and perform. Do it! Do it now!
