More performances, mixed reactions...LONG POST warning!

Postby Alfred Borden » Aug 13th, '11, 19:56

So after Mondays successful first performance, an Aussie girl at work hears about it and is desperate to see something, her friend used to do stuff in Oz, she loves it etc

So I ask her to think of a card and concentrate on it...a couple of hours later good old ID comes out and she has the 10d picked, I pluck it out as the only card the wrong way round...NO REACTION, she just nods?!

I ask her if shes seen it before, "yeah, my friend used to do that one and he used to tell me how most of the stuff was done ( ) and I was always disappointed"
I just changed the subject and left it there, I guess I will learn something amazing within a couple of weeks and blow her mind, that's the right approach most of you would take I guess?

So anyway, doing weights in the gym at work by myself the other night, a guy comes in from another department and we get talking as I have a football shirt on, when I have finished my session, I ask him to focus on a card, I go and shower and change and bring trusty old ID out...he tells me the King of hearts, I tell him that's the only card overturned in the deck
"S***, no way...what...the...wow, great trick, very very good"
So as I chuck the deck back in my bag we start talking about him joining my football game on Monday nights, I ask if he would like to see another
"would love to" he says
I pull the SV deck out and he picks his card, I then get him to replace and start dealing two piles, he eliminates one and so on and so forth...one card left, he turns it over, all wide eyed..."Sheeeet, very good mate..."

So today, a guy comes to clean our oven, he seems very friendly, speaks about his children and all whilst enjoying banter with our son, I have to take my Son out to get some bits and pieces, I ask him to think and focus on a card, 30 minutes later I ask him his card "seven of diamonds", I pluck the ID out of my pocket and produce his card reversed..

"Wow, I was just telling your wife how much I love magic, and that is brilliant! Thank you! Can you do it again please?"
I could do but when the magic circle are round with baseball bats

"Go on mate, one more time..."

OK, I will indulge you this once, but give me 5 minutes to clear my head please...anyways

"4 of clubs"

OK

"Haha, NO WAY...that is brilliant, you know I could watch you all afternoon"

Baring in mind I NEED to go at this point...BUT just can't help myself...SV deck plus reg deck produced and SV deck card reversed in pack...

Now I know you might be thinking I got inside your mind and messed with your head, lets approach things from a different angle, I'll put this deck under your cup of tea and ask you to pick a card from this deck, he picks, I do the ABOVE mentioned routine...one card left
"no way, surely not...BRILLIANT! I'm guessing that works because of the left and right side of the brain?! "

You forgot the other deck...I lift his tea, fan the deck, show the one card reversed..."no way....seriously mate, could watch this all afternoon :D "

I really must go now, sorry, before leaving I produce the CU and ask if it ever bothers him when he gets a pound and a penny change "guess so"

Hears what I do, as I place both coins in my hand, one dissapears....and hes shaking his head again...

"I'll tell you what, I'll leave my email address, and you could maybe do my eldests party on her birthday"

WOO-HOO...but must learn more tricks!!

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...

Good work!

As for the Australian girl, I find doing gimmickless things better with the skeptics or the "I've seen that" crowd. A trick with a couple of sleights and they're confused. They might know a lot of sleights but even still the method can confuse and when they pick up the deck and examine it and find it's not gimmicked, it starts to annoy them.

One I thought was rather lame in RRTCM was "Black Jack Detective" but then when I saw it on R Paul Wilson's RRTCM DVD I changed my mind and sure enough it gets great reaction from people. It confuses them.

I don't think either of those gentlemen wanted to come over as smug. Rather, and I hope they don't mind me speaking for them, they wanted to challenge you into being a little more flexible with your routine.

Obviously its working for you and you should be allowed to create and perform any routine you wish, but there may come a time when you're in a place and someone shoves a deck in your hand and asks you have to perform from an unfamiliar, completely shuffled deck. Its good to be prepared, no?

If I misinterpreted what was said I stand corrected, but yourself, Grimshaw and Simon both managed to make constructive posts without snide remarks like "he'll always carry a rucksack"

Certain people and their "better than you attitudes" can deter new people from forums

I post what I post not because I think I'm great but to encourage other new people to try magic and, and sometimes its nice to get some positive feedback

Anyway, back to the RRTCM :)

Nice to know that every forums the same

Trolls, haters, E-warriors, gimmick accounts etc

My mate has a theory that there are 5 bored nerds in a room trolling every forum on every subject 24/7.....interesting lives huh?

Funny, my first few weeks on here I was thinking it might be different...

Don't let the actions of one moron deter you from Talk Magic. Its a very good forum with some seriously knowledgeable people posting on it.

We have an ongoing problem with a certain someone who enjoys making up user names and posting provocative comments. He is best ignored. There are many cyber-bullies, and people can be very brave when they have internet anonymity as a protective barrier, but you'll find in real life they cut rather a sad figure.

Do stick around, otherwise the idiots will triumph. And I don't mean reverse your card in the deck.

You'll be good and smug one day. You're at the arrogant and inept stage now.

Never a truer word said pal

I'm not going to let a few d***heads get the better of me

The majority of people on here seem decent people, but like you say, give someone a PC, and even if they are overweight/spotty/nerdy, given a false name on the forum and they're all of a sudden the World's toughest guy
Happens on most forums oddly enough

Luckily most forums have an ignore option as well

Anyways, Grimshaw, you seem one of the good guys, cheers for sensible words

I think you have to wear a thick skin on all forums Borden...It would be a boring place if everyone were nice to each other anyway.

We are only human ( well at least i am anyway)

Many folks here have a lot of Professional Magic years behind them and are to be respected for their knowledge ..and you may do well to read some of the stickys that they have posted

Hey Alfred

Sounds like you have a real bug for magic now.Whether or not you use gimmicks only is entirely up to you and only you can decide if you care so much about being put on a spot by someone handing you an ordinary deck.Personally I would read RRTCM thoroughly and try learn the material, the sleights in particular proficiently. There is nothing more rewarding than fooling an audience with sleight of hand and I'm sure you will be buzzing even more when you do.Gimmicks are great for steadying nerves.I often do gimmick tricks if I'm not in the mood for busting my knuckles.Often the gimmicks are a handy way out allowing you to focus on presentation

I was on a plane with someone years ago and did the same thing.Got them to think of the card on the plane and upon arrival in the hotel I revealed the selection in the ID.rest assured this was super effective.

I see that you are taking every opportunity you can to perform which is very very important.Performing for strangers in particular is the real way of learning and is probably more important than sleight and tricks themselves.

Good luck
