I've never been "caught" with a gimmicked deck and don't ever expect to be. Why should I?

I think it comes down to you confidence as a performer as to whether you will get caught out or not, certainly in the early days I would get people grabbing at the cards, now a days it rarely if never happens.

If you're showing it to friends it's more likely they will ask to touch the props as they know you are new to the magic world

You know damn well I can moonwalk better than you!

I think these claims need backing up with video evidence.

I did see a magician at work once who when he put his deck away after one effect he went into his pocket for another. One sharp punter asked him why he couldn't do all these tricks with one deck and he mumbled some reply about some tricks needing red decks others needing blue.

I do use gaff decks myself but only after I have done stuff using a normal deck. There's a great trick almost self working in The Card Magic of Nick Trost which happens in their hands called Double Coincidence Prediction which is great to do before switching in a gaff as it's the kind of trick that's so astonishing to a spec that they'll instantly check the cards after getting any possible future suspicion out of the way.

Hey Alfred,

You sound like you're having great fun. Please keep on posting - it's bringing back fond memories from not so long ago.

I would also fall in line with the others telling you that you really should have other routines ready, especially for the time when you don't carry your favorite gaffed deck with you. If you want to continue with the mentalism aspect, I would suggest reading about billet work, possibly from the e-book Switchcraft. You will also find a very versatile and useful gimmick (and one that the spectators will have no chance of finding out about) in the first chapter of 13 Steps to Mentalism.

So we had some work drinks last night, I brought the CU out for a little bit of fun in the bar, but then did something I knew about as a kid but never performed...guy outside is smoking by himself. I go and join him
"I didn't know you smoked"
Nah, just come out to keep you company, but I wouldn't mind the last drag on your cigarette, I took it, took a drag, then made a fist and showed him smoke coming from my fist, I then put it out with fingers and thumb, then told him that sometimes coins can do other stuff as well
I removed a coin from my pocket, rested it over my fist...whilst checking the cigarette had gone out properly, then dropped the coin in and showed him no cigarette

Simple, but great reaction, after checking my hands he went inside and told everyone "I don't know what the f*** he just did". LOL

Then people want to start seeing more stuff, but like someone told me on here, don't become a performing monkey, so we enjoyed drinks and I left them thirsty for more!

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...

There actually was video evidence at the time which proved conclusively that Beardy cannot moonwalk and that I am amazing.
I probably don't have it anymore but I'll have a look when I'm home. Alternatively I could just make a new video, you in Chris?

Good stuff!

The reactions from people is such a great feeling, and something I believe you need to get from time to time to keep the enthusiasm up for reading and watching DVD's and learning new stuff

Sorry Lawrence , the statement wasnt aimed at you but just a generalization. Of course , those with experience in audience management techniques will have different perspective as to whether to switch a deck in or out.

( how the hell does this damn quote function work)

Oh I'm in, if only to humiliate your ass ;)

Will have to wait until September though!
