Jerry Sadowitz interview

Postby me_simon » Aug 15th, '11, 19:47

Richard Herring's interviewed Jerry Sadowitz for an Edinburgh Fringe magazine.

It's on Page 9. It's more about his comedy but he briefly touches on magic.

I've only seen Sadowitz perform once and it was a memorable experience. Certainly not for the easily offended. Or even moderately offended. If anyone is not familiar with his comedy, if you're offended by any comedy broadcast on TV, avoid Sadowitz.

facinating read. Its also worth scrolling down to the bottom, as there is a piece on Paul Nathans "the I hate children show"

Thanks, I missed that bit. I only downloaded it for the Jerry Sadowitz interview.

Loved this bit:

everyone is invited to bring a deck of cards and may challenge me at any time to use their deck. If I can’t do any trick in the show with their deck then I’ll give them a thousand dollars.

What a genius gimmick!

I made the mistake of going to Jerry Sadowitz's show a few days ago. He didn't do any magic what so ever and he spent the hour shouting (with spit) racist/sexist/homophobic dribble. I used to enjoy him on Tv and I expected it to be course but this was toothpulling hell. I have no idea why the Assembly let him carry on. What a disappointing idiot.

He's certainly not for everyone. I put him in the same category as Scott Capurro - you won't get belly laughs but you'll leave uncomfortable. But only if you like your comedy bare knuckled.

I'm surprised he didn't do any magic though. I thought he was doing the same show I saw him do 18 months ago and he did magic in between the stand-up.

Richard "King of Edinburgh" Herring is even more of a comedy legend than Sadowitz. His AIOTM and "Collings and Herrin" podcasts are superb.

You forgot the second (aiotm).

I was actually at the first AIOTM (aiotm) recording in 2009 and thought it was a bit of a dud so didn't bother to continue with it. It was only in June this year that I decided to give it another go and I was kicking myself because by episode 3 of the first series it had hit its stride. TV's Emma Kennedy's anecdotes had me in tears. I gave up too soon! I was a fool.

Have you seen his latest show? It's the first one in years I haven't seen in preview. Headmaster's Son, Hitler Moustache and Christ on a Bike were superb. He truly is the "King of Edinburgh".

I love Jerry's comedy, but it is raw and offensive. But if you meet him in person, he is a lovely, friendly and helpful guy. I would love to catch this show.

I met him in London last year. I was quite charmed by him. I never expected to be. He asked me to teach him the Notis Cascade. He saw me do it about 30 years ago and had wondered about it ever since.

On the other hand I am quite sure I would hate his show. I have a very sensitive prudish nature.

I got the impression he isn't like that off stage but what a terrible waste of good talent to rant about horrible stuff for an hour and deny the audience the magician that most of them came to see. I know there was a fair few magic lovers in the crowd as their attire gave them away (such as card pips on clothing)

It was one of the more expensive shows too and I felt quite ripped off. I left wishing I had walked out like many already had.

If I go to see a Sadowitz gig I certainly don't want to see magic. In fact it would annoy me. I would be there for the vicious comedy. I am sure most people are the same.

He is doing a few shows, not one. Unless I'd been spiked with some major hallucinogens, I was definitely at one of them, there was no magic.

Only 1 joke made me laugh, the rest was weak comedy and of inexcusable subject matter. I watch a lot of comedy and I love that comedy can skirt around and often get away with crossing over into unPC territory. He really didn't get away with it and the atmosphere was awkward in the audience. Quite frankly, shouting blunt racist abuse isn't comedy.

When he asked if there was any questions at the end of the show, someone shouted, "Do some magic!".

His poster says, "Magician, Comedian, Psychopath". I only saw the latter and I came away thinking that he should have been paying us to some to the show.

To the public Jerry is a comedian. It is only a few nerds that consider him a magician. It is the comedy that fills the theatres for his shows, not the magic. I know he is handy at it, but that's not what his audience comes for. He has been on the scene two decades or more, so it's not as if people don't know what they are getting when they go to one of his shows.

Gotta agree here. There was little to no magic, and (for me) comedy is not a man standing on stage and repeadedly saying the word "C**T" for two hours. So yeah, all you're getting is the psychopath bit.
