Coming Up: Magic

Monday 15 August
11:00pm - 11:35pm
Channel 4

Jane Horrocks portrays another whippet-thin but fiercely determined character in this odd little comedy drama about a local magic society. She plays Felicity, the group's overambitious chairwoman who's suspected by all the members of murdering their favourite magician. Lead conspiracist is Gary (Ricky Grover from Getting On), the man's grandson whose case isn't helped by the fact that he's on 17 different types of medication and keeps hearing voices coming through a battered radio. Jokes about mental health, even in a hyper-real context such as this, are often a bit queasy, but Gary's state of mind isn't the only thing about Nick Mohammed's script that will leave you feeling off-kilter and bewildered. But since an illusionist never offers an explanation for his trickery, perhaps we shouldn't be looking for answers here, either.

Ricky Grover? Perhaps an interesting choice...

Will watch this on 4oD once it's up, but have to say Coming Up has been a bit hit and miss so far.

Mohammed can be quite hit and miss. His one-man show about the moonshot was good.

i thought it was bloody awful.

Shame.. It should of been much better with that cast. No magical content, save a pisspoor cgi floating lightbulb, and one parasol production, and a colour change hank.. it didnt show magicians in a good light.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

It's a shame I logged on here last night, because had I not seen this post I could so easily have missed this rubbish. That is thirty minutes of my life that I will never get back.

As a writer myself, I find it baffling that someone gets paid for coming up with this.

Given the opening, I think we were supposed to see this as tongue in cheek, but that didn't make it any better... Clearly someone who intended to write about what they think the public sees as 'magic'. Shame.
