The Devil's Picturebook by Derren Brown

Postby CArlight1958 » Aug 18th, '11, 08:30

Hello fellow magician's.

I'm sorry if I seem a little slow off the mark here, but is it possible to get a hold of this routine on DVD format.

I've looked on Darren's website, but this item looks like it has been removed.
The thread on here about this seems to suggest it's for magician's only.

I would love to get a hold of this routine, & can assure everyone the secret will stay with me only.

Can anyone help?
Sorry if I have missed something here, it's a common fault of mine. :?

It's available again, but you have to search around. It's not meant to be easy for you.

Thanks for the reply Jo.

I still don't seem to be having any luck though.... :?

Maybe they should change the name to.

Make sure you do some research looking at reviews first. The stuff on the DVD is not for everybody. Part one includes lots of lateral/ classic palming technique and gaff decks, and part two reqiures a lot of rehersal (not just practice) in order to execute successfully.

It's definitely for serious (and skilled) magicians only, which is one reason why it's rare and expensive. Another reason is that it's privately produced in small batches.

It's not "a routine", but a two-volume collection of effects dating from the time when Derren was changing over from magician to mentalist. The first DVD contains pure card tricks, the second contains card tricks with a mentalism slant. A high level of card-handling expertise is assumed.

Apart from checking Derren's website, you might also want to keep an eye on eBay, which is where I grabbed my copy. (I lucked out and got it relatively cheap because it was badly misclassified, so there was no competition.) It's WAY too advanced for me, but I'm keeping hold of it! I might eventually grow into it, and besides, I've got a "happy birthday" autograph on it now.

Experienced? Me? Ha!

It's an entertaining and informative experience, even if you can't hope to do any of the routines. But the price is awfully high for the entertainment value alone.

I still think you should keep your eye out for it. As previously stated, it is entertaining and you can watch it in an aspirational fashion. It'll give you something to work towards.

I use a few things from it, most notably Derren's handling of OOTW and the trick he does with an ID. But not an ID you understand, just a deck that isn't there.

In my opinion there's some effects there you'd probably be able to do.

I can personally (with a memory jog) perform his trick 'Smoke' (which he performed to Stephen Fry). It just takes a heck of a lot of prep work and some good timing, but the whole trick only really needs one sleight to pull off.

If you did manage to find it, I think you should get it if you can afford to. It would be a great thing to own and you'd enjoy watching it! :)

I think as well as his card-hardling, his ability to misdirect is amazing. That's sadly something that can't really be taught. Very gifted performer.

I'm fairly new to card magic, and I bought this thinking I would learn the three card routine. Alas (and I don't need to say it), I certainly can't do it justice. Knowing the sleights is one thing, but performing it properly with misdirection and everything else is another thing entirely.

Sorry for re-opening a long forgotten post but I feel it better to do this than start yet another thread on this topic.

Basically my dvd copy of this has become un-readable by the dvd player due to someone who is no longer aloud near my dvds. I now wish to get myself a replacment copy at this persons expence however the 'magicians only' section of Derrens site has long been missing so my question is this, How to I purchanse a new copy of this great dvd? I seem to remember reading not too long ago on here that if you contact his assistant via twitter or something that you could buy a copy that way. Is this true?

Hopefully someone can help.

Sometimes a disc can become scratched to the point that a DVD player won't read it, but a PC DVD drive will. If that's the case you could make a copy with your PC and have a brand new disc. I've done it with a few of my kids' DVDs where the originals have become damaged to the point of useless.

Another alternative is the disc repair service that a lot of video game shops offer. They use a rotary machine that polishes the scratches out, making the disc readable again.

Damn! I have no intention of buying it, but I'm still wasting a lot of time trying to find it. I definitely have a puzzle addiction :
