Don't know if this is going to be edited but I am only theorising not having seen the trick done.

Would the assistant have time to count the buttons or get a count from a video. If so my guess is that the slapping is a coded answer

hmmm...that could work, but maybe your making too much out of a slapping motion. Maybe derren added that just so us magi would think exactly that. We'd have our heartset on beleiving that the slapping is key to the effect, when really were a mile off. Or thats the secret and im rambling on like an idiot...its one of the 2 :P

Subitizing...

Postby Tomo » Jun 16th, '05, 16:19

Hello there.

If you see a sufficiently small number of objects (3 or so), you don't need to count them. You naturally know how many there are. This means you can treat them as one unit. Now, if each unit were part of a larger collection...

It's hack #35 in the book I reviewed recently, "Mind Hacks". Mind you, I hadn't read that particular bit of it until this afternoon. I have no idea if this is the principle Mr Brown uses, but it sort of fits, though...

Im pretty sure it is a practice thing/technique. I remember he did one with Skittles where he "taught" a guy to do it, and he did. It was quite cool. Derren claims its photographic memory? I odnt know...

Also I think the slapping is just a bit of a show. It just looks so ridiculous and so entertaining. Afterall it is not an amazingly exciting trick is it, I think the slapping for fun.

Subitizing with groups of three of four fits better than "teaching" someone to have an eiditic memory. Besides, such a memory affects recall not counting.

But then again, I think Brown delights in people running around finding ever more elaborate explanations for his effects. People on one hypnosis board I lurk on claim he HAS to use hypnosis or NLP for all his effects. Even the ones where there's quite clearly a self working or sleight element. Nothing else will do - which is a cool effect in itself!
