What did you struggle most with?

Postby svengaliposeur » Aug 30th, '11, 15:59

Hello fellow conjurors,

If you've seen my blog you will know Im charting my progress along the royal road to card magic. Im struggling most to make a good top palm. I know it needs practise but I find it harder than the pass. Anyone else struggle with the palm and if so how did you overcome it?

I stopped worrying about it and concentrated on the spectator. Once I figured that little bit out, I palmed the card when the spectator was looking at my face rather than my hands. Pretty soon after that I realized I could probably top palm an elephant (if I was strong enough) and nobody would notice. Not long after that I found out quite by surprise that my top palm had developed quite well without me knowing about it and now people can look at my hands on not see it. But the most amazing thing is they seldom look at my hands when I am talking to them.

I struggled with a decent pressure fan. To the point where I actually gave up on it because I realized I was dedicating a lot of valuable time trying to learn something that was not going to enhance my magic in the sleightest, (don't pardon the pun). I switched to the LePaul spread which is so much more fun to do and gets a rise out of the spectators.

I think the most important thing to remember is that the card is levered up into the palm, having been pushed slightly off the pack by the left thumb, by pressing downwards with the right little finger. You will get the hang of it I'm sure. When you do, you'll wonder what you found difficult about it in the first place. Follow the instructions in The Royal Road to Card Magic, keep practising and you should be fine. Good luck.
