Magician Arrested After Hypnotizing 41 Kids

Postby mrz0mbie » Sep 4th, '11, 13:12

Magician Miller Zambrano Posada was taken into custody after 41 students went into hypnotic trance after his show in Mocoa, Colombia.

A Mocoa, Colombia high school’s “fun day,” complete with circus acts, clowns and the much awaited hypnotism act turned awry after several kids went into a mass panic attack and had to be taken to the hospital....

.....at the end of the show and when Zambrano left the stage, the students were ushered back to their classrooms.
Suddenly, as the students walked back, several students developed bizarre symptoms. Police at the scene reported some of the students were crying, others dived into the ground for no reason, others hit their chest with their palms. One girl went as far as to scream that she was seeing the devil, and before too long a larger group of kids went into a mass panic attack.

I suppose this could be put in the doves head but thought this is a good discussion topic. Anybody have any thoughts on the matter?

Stupid kids.

edit: Something similar happened a few months ago in the US. I don't suppose the kids could have seen that news report and thought they'd like to have a bit of fun too. High School kids are stupid anyway. Their marching bands are always having mass fainting episodes, the girls all have the same "time of the month", and let's not get started on the stupid suicide cults that suddenly spring up. High School kids are weird. Best not hypnotise them I say.

Menstrual cycles do in fact synchronise. There's a good evolutionary principle involved.

This was the EXACT excuse Shawn used as a kid for why he was home from school eating cereal all day to his Dad in the show Psych, no joke! :D

But seriously, if you know a bit about hypnotism then you know how stupid this is.

I used to be a journalist and I know how journalists run with a rumour like this. It didn't happen - not the way it was reported in any case. If there is any germ of truth in the story (which I doubt) then the kids orchastrated it all.

I have always thought that the committee that was formed in Paris headed by Ben Franklin over 200 years ago to investigate hypnosis had it right when they concluded that hypnotism was merely "an excitement of the imagination". This report proves it. Mass hysteria of this kind was quite common in the early days of hypnosis.

I wonder what they meant by "kids". A lot depends on the age group. In North America hypnosis shows are very common in high schools where the kids are around 14 to 18 years of age. I would never get kids up on stage that were younger than 16. But you should never hypnotise young children. You are asking for trouble if you do that. And if there are any in the audience you need to actually say that hypnosis is not suitable for them so they don't go under in the audience and cause you grief.

It is newspaper stories like this that make life difficult for stage hypnotists and is the reason that it is so restricted in the UK. It was actually illegal in Ontario, Canada until I personally got the law repealed. My memoirs explain how I did this. Truly I am a most influential human being.
