Performance Speed

Postby morrowsean » Sep 5th, '11, 18:30

Hi All, Can someone tell me what sort of speed tricks should be performed? Indoors when im practising, my magic is so controlled and very visual, when i perform to someone im inclined to rush and i either forget the moves or my hands start to shake. But indoors this never happens and everything goes the way i want it to. What am i doing wrong?

Thanks!

You're getting nervous, that's whats happening. You just need to take a breath and slow it down. I'm guessing you're just performing to your friends and family so what's the worst that could happen? It goes wrong. It's not life or death so just relax. Confidence comes over time so just keep at it.

Slowly. But not like a funeral march. Plenty of pauses to allow what you have done to be appreciated.

For each trick, work out in advance which are the key dramatic moments such as the reveal at the end and any points where dramatic tension is built and, when you perform, at those points when you feel a pause is necessary, count to three in your head and then continue. Having that mental count should slow you down if you're rushing too much and is just enough time to build a little tension without going over the top.

It depends, what people have said about adding pauses and building tension is right, but it's also good to have a pacey feel to the set, not rushed or over-quick, but pace. Also when you are busy doing table hopping or walkaround you only have a few moments to work each group so you can't spend all day with them. Maybe that's a different point, but the more people pay, the more work they expect you to do, so they book you for a larger group of people, hence you work faster around them.

Hello morrowsean,

I was just the same, especially the shaking hands thing.

Things are much better now, & I have more confidence.
One thing I say to myself in my head is.

"You've practised this a thousand times, I no what I am doing, settle down, & do it"
Seems to settle the nerves down.
Having said that. I do have a lot of admiration for the guys on here who perform to larger crowds.

Don't be nervous mate.
Just be good...

Yeah when trying to show someone I would notice I speed up and sometimes hands start to shake (adrenaline). Recently I've got more of a handle on it and just slow right down if I notice anything like that - I just look at them directly and say something rather than burning my own hands. Just try to go at a casual pace.

I kept having the hand-shaking problem until I realised that I need to practise more! After double-lifting was second nature, and I could recall all the trick without thinking, it wasn't a problem. There are a few people (my mum is one!) who I just cannot do magic for though at the moment, they just reduce me to panic of revealing! I'm still a beginner really :)
In terms of performance speed, I go neither fast or slow, try to turn over a card and shuffle like anybody else would turn over a card and shuffle. Apart from when I have no need to control a card, and tell them to keep track. Then speed it up like hell and flourish the bejeeeezus out of the cards!

Here is a little trick. Try not to fool your audience. Try to entertain them. Communicate with them. Just enjoy it along with them. Relax and it is not the end of the world.
