How do people handle a reaction like this?

Postby Alfred Borden » Sep 12th, '11, 11:28

One of the girls at work sees me messing with a deck of cards, asks me to do a trick, so I go over to her desk and perform Mind Power deck routine which blows her mind, she says she wants more...so after a bit of work I go back and perform Gemini twins to a fantastic reaction

At this point she INSISTS that I tell her how they are done, she starts ringing colleagues up that I have performed on before...she gets nowhere but still persists..

I think at this point I'll leave her with one to blow her mind then leave it, I ask her to shuffle the cards, I have a ready prediction on offer that she pockets and then she deals the cards into three piles, she turns over the top three cards and they match her prediction in her pocket...ok so now she flips, she NEEDS to know now and is trying anything and everything to get me to spill the beans, I'm not saying anything at all....first time reaction like this, I mean I've had the "go on, tell us how its done" before but never to this extent

She then says, right I'll just look on YouTube...and as I was leaving her she was looking at "magic tricks revealed", my God didn't realise how many co**s on YouTube...so 45 minutes later she's STILL checking out card tricks online!!

Doubt she'll find what shes looking for, but was interested in peoples thoughts on this kind of OTT reaction?!

Hello Alfred,

You could always tell her boss that she's using the office computer to play on utube... :D

Seriously though mate, that's the internet for you.
If people really want to know how, or where to get something from, then they can. It has it's plus sides.
I suffered for years with Cluster headaches.
The internet lead me to a group who self medicate with Alternatives treatments. Saved my life.
So I am glad that freedom of information is there, but just because she knows how a trick is done, doesn't mean to say she will ever be able to master it.

Having said that, it annoys me too that magicians show how a trick is done.

I think they should be shot :D :D

Carl - yes I agree, for the most part I love the tinternet and all it gives us, and at the end of the day its only a card trick I guess

She was quite funny afterwards though, "do you know how to do this one, where you change the reds into black?" LOL :D

Its the sort of people revealing the tricks that makes me laugh, all so geeky, no doubt the bravest thing they'll ever do

And DJBenz, yep, always nice

I'm working on a 4 ace production routine at the moment.
John Guastaferro "Tidal Wave Aces"
It's quite a knuckle busting routine, but well worth the effort.
It has one of the best full deck colour changes I have yet seen.

"The ballet cut".....My new hobby. :D :D

First, forgive the pun but the entire issue lies in your performance. Yes you did a great job and fooled the beans out of her, but in the end you left it as a puzzle almost it seems, as a challenge which she accepted to the point of going to youtube.

Now your job is to reconstruct your routine and see where you left the magic and started performing a puzzle, it is in there somewhere. And really it is one of the most difficutl aspects of magic.

Once the begging started you further added to the spectators 'frustration' by doing one more trick, in doing that you just about said, 'oh you can't catch me, here I'll even show you another, see how great I am."

The proper response is impossible to say because it depends on your perfomance style, your personal style and your level of experience. I would have tried for something like, "hey it's magic just enjoy it for what it is." or something to that effect and walked away.

Too often our ego's get in the way and we say to much.

Best thing now is to perform for somebody else. Each performance to new people will add to your experience and you will soon figure it all out.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post, your advice is taken on board

I just wanted to leave with a trick that was done in her hands, and when performing I like to have as much fun as possible and am never smug

I often get the "how did you do that?" question but often just reply with a jovial type "I could tell you but the magic circle will be round", and people will often just chuckle and leave it there, she was the first (in only 15-20 people) that has persisted like this

She hit me with something else a lot later, "will you teach me one to show the kids?" I said of course, I'll bring in something tomorrow

In terms of experience I am fairly new to performing, but learning all the time

What you said has been taken on board though, thanks again

While I agree with bmat 100% it should also be kept in mind that there are some people out there who just have to know how things work, magic included. My housemate is a classic example, on a night out a while ago I did one of my own little card effects and she was blown away, had a great magical reaction. A little later though, she wants to know how it's done, because that's the kind of girl she is. Simple as. She generally doesn't like magic as a rule, for this very reason, not knowing how something works irritates her.

I have been getting a couple of good reaction lately, I am not up to the level of the tricks described, but I can do a basic ACR and card prediction which gets a decent reaction. I would love to learn some tricks (primarily cards) that would get that reaction, can anyone advise any?

Kinda funny you mention not being up to that standard of trick...ironic even given I've just started learning a ACR and am gagging to get it right!

I am mostly about the gaffed decks at the moment but do have balls of steel and enjoy pulling the ID out for members of management at the right time :D

I started a thread recently about what trick got the best reaction from people, and someone said the Haunted Key, not much sleight required and fairly simple so just goes to show if presentation is correct what you can achieve
