Magical Influences

Postby Benjamin_Jones » Sep 12th, '11, 08:08

Hello all,

I joined the forum some weeks ago but not be about much due to personal circumstances. However back now and in the meantime I've beed toying with my set of bikes. Getting quite good with some stuff now.

I joined here as I enjoy magic and wanted to develp my skills with cards but am intrigued by those who perform for audiences whether table hopping or on stage. At the moment Dynamo seems to be the main name in conventional circles and just wondered whether for those that perform if they have to adapt their routines to encompass some of the "popular" style magic being shown on TV to meet audience expectation?

Is there still call for a magician with a good card repertoire?

A while away for me yet but at some point I'd like to perform, once I am at a position where I'm confident and technically proficient with my cards.

I never worry about the latest fads in magic. ''Street'' magic seems to be the ''in'', cool thing at the moment, especially with some of the younger guys (not that theres anything wrong with that). The current trend seems to have started with Blaine, and now Dynamo. Ive always loved traditional close-up magic and that is what i perform. Ive always found the classic plots to be very well recieved. Im also rarely interested in the latest ''must have'' from the magic dealer, prefering a good old book instead - there are many overlooked gems in many of these books.

So in short just do what calls to you. If you enjoy card magic then do card magic. Whatever you choose just concentrate on doing it well. There will always be a place for a well rehearsed, polished magician, regardless of style.
