Actually, throwing a dissenting opinion into the ring, I'd gladly give up both books and DVDs if there was a way to get a similar volume of instruction in person with current performers.

Nothing beats hands on teaching.

Well put, Stacy. Some of the stuff in the classic texts is so old that few modern spectators will have seen it - so it'll be new to them. One of my favourite sayings: "Don't follow trends - lead them!"

I must say I go entirely for books. They contain so much more information, are portable, you can bring them everywhere, dip in for information or inspiration, and savour the ideas.
I do have a few DVDs, and some time I intend to purchase a DVD player so that I can view them. But I'm in no rush.

I like books, mainly because I haven't actually tried with dvds. Its a budget thing I guess, books are a lot cheaper...

Not necessarily, but most of them are much better value for money. You may get just one routine on a DVD.

I tend to have a better "hit rate" with DVDs. I appreciate that I get 40 routines in Book x, but I may only want to use 1 or 2.
A couple of books I have bought have been, (for me), complete "duds".
For me, I buy a DVD if there is someting specific I want to learn/use, and I buy a book if I just want a good read with the possibility of extracting something I will use. I seldom buy a DVD "to browse through".
Neither is "better", they are different media, suiting different people in different ways. In 5 years we'll have a great collection of Kindle and Tablet magic too I guess, which is when the worlds of books and DVDs will merge. Ian Kendall does a splendid job already with the multimedia versions of "The Works" - .pdf "books" with embedded video.
