Mac Macdonald, who only had one arm, is reputed to have done this trick (the four ace trick) and because he only had the one (suppose he had to do it single-handed :-) ) he developed the gimmick used to make it work.

Transistion then from 'four aces' to 'MacDonald's Aces' to indicate the method by which the trick was done. Without the gimmick, and with the extra arm, it's probably more aptly described as the 'four aces' again.

Undoubtedly someone more up on the history will correct errors in thsi where they exist!
