Is this a good idea?????

Postby cartorious » Sep 28th, '11, 12:22

Afternoon all,

I'm getting married in December and, up now now, hadn't really put much thought into writing a speech for before the wedding breakfast, but after reading the 4thcircle's topic on how her holiday went (see topic here);

http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic41079.php

I suddenly thought, why don't I do a trick instead of some soppy, heart-felt speech (I really don't do lovey-dovey well). So, I ask you guys, would it be a good idea to do the anniversary waltz, for my new wife and the rest of the guests (about 30ish), with myself as the second person in the couple, using the patter as the story of how we got together, blah blah.....i love you....best day of my life....yadda yadda????

Thoughts would be appreciated.
Ta,

Brilliant idea, mate. Go for it.

Then your best man can saw the chief bridesmaid in half.

Cool idea, cheers.
My best man is actually interested in getting into magic, although if he makes the rings disappear, i will have to kill him.

If you're no good at loveydovey, read a poem from someone that is. I don't think a magic trick is suitable for your speech. Tell your wife how happy she makes you and how much you love her. Not how clever you are with cards.

This is, of course, just my opinion.

Few things in life are actually magical. Your wedding day is one of them. Don't gild the lilly.

I think it would be novel and the patter could be as lovey dovey as you like.

But then, I'm not married so I have no clue!

This day is about everyone else, not just you. Particularly your partner and your respective families. I think you should stick to a speech. You can make it individual and unique, reflecting your personality. But substituting a magic trick is a cop-out and I don't think you should do that.
At my wedding I did a brief magic spot before the band. That's where it belongs. Do a speech.
You can check out my new book (sorry for the shameless plug) Need2Know Public Speaking for advice on putting together an effective wedding speech. http://www.need2knowbooks.co.uk/product ... Guide.html

I agree with Tony. Please do not do some magic. Make a speech. This is a day that will (hopefully) live long in your memory. Please make that memory one of you making a heart-felt speech, rather than you cringing every time someone mentions that "trick" that you did. Imagine if it went wrong. No, make the speech. If you want to do some magic, do it later in the bedroom. Fnar fnar.

I will bow to the majority as I appear to be the only one who thinks it would be a good idea.

I agree with Tony and Paul. Is this a good idea? No.

What if you were an fishmonger rather than a magician? "I don't want to do a speech so instead I'll throw some mackerel at the guests, I'm sure that'll go down well, everyone loves fish"

You can do magic anytime, you only get married once (or thereabouts) - you've made the right decision, do a speech and enjoy the day.

I laughed out loud at the mental image of fish distribution from the top table.

My wife would have crucified me if I had substituted magic for a speech, I am very comfortable speaking in front of a crowd though so was not really an issue for me.

The grooms speech is really less about lovey dovey and more about thank you's. Thank the in-laws, bridesmaids, everyone else etc. and tell your wife you love her and that she looks amazing. The adrenalin and emotion of the day will make this sound heartfelt whether you are the lovey dovey sort or not.

Oh and do not take jokes from a "grooms speech" website. It sounds unoriginal, tacky and very impersonal.

(That was a long "No, don't do it by the way!) :)

I'm totally with everyone else, avoid the magic trick and instead give a nice speech. If my husband had done a magic trick at our wedding, I'd have throttled him.
