Quick question on neo magnets ......

Postby moonbeam » Sep 27th, '11, 22:22

This has prob been asked (and answered) on here before, but as you may, or may not, be aware .... the search function is goosed at the mo with the introduction of the new forum, etc ..... anyway ...... on with my query:

I'm after a magnet (pref nice and small/compact) that will be strong enough to "penetrate" through a pub/bar table (I'm guessing 1" to 1.5" thickness) for a pk effect. Nothing fancy - I'm just gonna be moving coins and other small objects so I just need to know what strength/size magnet I should be looking at in order to be able to "penetrate" the table.

Ta so much :)

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

I find neodynium magnets are incredibly strong at close quarters but have a very rapid dropoff over distance the strongest one I've got is for a routine I'm developing where it will hold three linking rings, and when it grabs a small magnetic object is is VERY hard to make it let go. That said at a distance of one inch the magnetism is hadly noticeable. I don't have it to hand right now but I can check more exat details on Thursday.

Off the top of my head, unless someone has a better idea, my suggestion would be to find a pub with cheaper tables.

I think you'd be pushing it (no pun intended) to find one that strong unless you went for an electromagnetic coil hidden inside an tube or other object.

I have one that's strong enough - but it's the big clumsy one that's used in "The Bat" ..... so I was hoping to find something alot smaller if possible :(

Try a 10mm or 20mm x 10mm deep disc neo. eMagnets do them with next day delivery. It's basically a question of experimenting until you find the smallest one that will do the job.

unleashyourdreams.co.uk have a large range of magnets, I have a disc magnet that came with the spirit lamp and that seems strong, drop them an email, I'm sure they can help.

Are the objects you are moving steel core/ putty etc ?

The reason im asking is that you can cut the size and strength needed for the magnet if the items to be moved also have an embeded magnet, rather than a steel type core. Having them repel each other it can be surprising how far away they can be from each other to still be effective.

Edit: This bordered on exposure so check out 13 steps, it gives you a good location to keep the magnet that is less obvious and not size dependent. I'll check the chapter when I get home.

As it turns out it was not in 13 steps (mine does have an index after all, where was the thread that says it did not?).

I cannot remember where I saw it. I'll have a quick look later if I get time as I am sure it had several very good routines along with the description but if you think about possible places it could be kept, they are finite. The only thing that stops me posting it is Google's overzealous spiderbotting. :(

    I have this http://www.amazon.com/Applied-Magnets-S ... 896&sr=8-3" target="_blank

But if you want to get it, get it fast. I first saw it for $12.99. A moment later the price went up to $16.99, so I got it at 17 dollars. The price seems to keep going up.

    I found this at Supermagnetman.com :
Since June, 2010 through June, 2011 the price of the Neodymium metal has increased 750%.

http://www.supermagnetman.net/index.php he has some good magnets too.
