It was indeed, but performed in an absolutely 100% safe manner.

It makes a nice plot line for a murder mystery, nasty Magician needs to 'eliminate' someone, gets them to 'volunteer' and, oh dear, the guillotine trick just sort of went wrong, Officer.

If anyone has John Fisher's biography of Tommy Cooper, they'll recall the story he includes when Tommy wasn't at his best, medication etc was causing him serious confusion at times and he was booked to be on the Michael Parkinson Show. Someone thought it a good idea for Tommy to do the Guillotine trick using Michael as the subject but, having shown that the blade was sharp by decapitating a melon or something, Tommy forgot to set the safety switch for when Michael put his head in the stocks. It was a live broadcast but luckily the director realised what had happened, switched to a close up shot of Tommy for a few moments whilst an assistant crawled round the back of the Guillotine and set the switch thus saving Parky from being terminated on live TV!
