(yet another) First gig thread

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Have you ever watched a magician perform at a children's party?

No, Rob. I was asking the OP. People keep talking about effects, and so miss the point. :-)

I am a foundation stage teacher so do spend my time controlling 3-7 year olds, so personally don't find it difficult. As for balloons I don't see why you can't learn cutlass and dog in 3 weeks. But from the other advice cups and balls, paddles, colouring book, d-lites should all go down well.

Bullet catch, smash and grab routine lol dont bother practicing mate just dont use your own hand ;)

Seriously though mate 3 weeks is enough to get a couple of animals good. Indulge your CUPS and check a magic sites kid section for stuff you (and your boy) like the look of. Alakazam has a good kids section with customer reviews as well.

Hi Ted

Have seen a "childrens entertainer" who was quite awful, stumble through 90 minutes of bad audience control, fumbled tricks and general bad showmanship

That was at my niece's birthday party in the summer

So I guess the answer to you question is no

But this isn't really my show, more 15/20 minutes to entertain some kids and make my Son happy

I think I see the point you're making though....

Hope it's not too late to say that the internet is packed with instructions for the classic balloon dog, but if you want to make more than one (or actually even for one) it might be worth investing in a balloon pump.

Also a very good magician once told me that a good balloon dog can be milked for performance, right down to drawing on eyes, nose and mouth with a sharpie.

Also for kids I'd go with one of my personal favourites, professor's nightmare... now best conveyed in the Fiber Optics Extended videos (in my opinions), though there are other sources and a lot of it can be learned by watching performances if you know the basic moves. Nice bright ropes catch the eye and a few possibilities for audience involvement with little scope for mischief on their part.

No, not too late and thanks for that Stacy

Funny you should mention Professors nightmare because was going through my magic box at the weekend and was thinking about a Cut and Restored routine I know but also know a nice Profs nightmare which might go down well

Just a quick note to mention, Mark Lewis has this great routine called The Letter or something like that. No Magic just entertainment which is what the little ones love. It also helps to 'get them on your side' right at the beginning with the participation. I have something similar written down if you want to take a look. I did my Daughters 4th Birthday many years ago and I possibly made the mistake of spending too much time doing Magic and not enough time entertaining. Having said that Run Rabbit run went down a storm with the 4 Year olds!
