On it's own maybe not, however the millions of tiny bits of British culture we know without realising it are what differentiates a citizen from a visitor.

You don't have to go to the other end of the earth for that. I'm only from across the pond (continental Europe) and after two years, I'm still learning (mostly about not very famous celebrities and tv shows, heh). Even over such a small distance, the differences are staggering..!

Scored 11 out of 24, so I guess it's back home for me, though... ;)

I got twelve out of twenty four - but then I am not British and never lived there.

11 for me to.

Using Talkmagic as a data set, it looks like the majority of British Citizens score about 11 out of 24. Maybe the Home Office needs to bit a bit less strict.

Or alternitively:

Damn foreigners, coming over here and exceeding the abilities of natives with their knowledge of 'Britishness'. It's poitical correctness gone mad. Or backwards. or something. Somebody get Richard Littlejohn on the phone

12/24 for me. I did fail to see the relevance of the question about a surge in recruitment in the West Indies with regard to British Citizenship though. :?

.... sounds like a good plan - mind if we all join you ???

Some of these questions are proper stupid. What relevance does it bear and how the hell am I meant to know .... year of first census; year of the right to divorce; number of under 19's in the UK; % of Muslims in the UK in 2001 .... a few more as well .....

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

I guess it's like most "exams" really.

You do an IT exam you'll answer ridiculous binary questions.
You do a medical exam and you'll need to know a super-rare condition that affects 1 in 10 billion.

It's more a "proof of study" than a "test of knowledge".

I think that's the point though, isn't it? It's not a test to see if they know enough to be British, but to determine if they are prepared to put the effort into reading up on obscure statistics or whatever.

Exactly.

When I had to complete certain qualifications to give financial advice, the obscurity of some of the questions was ridiculous to the extreme, in my working life 85% had no relevance whatsoever but I still needed to learn it to pass the test.

If the test has obvious answers that could simply be guessed then it would not be much of a test but as I said originally it would be interesting to see the overall question bank as the article is clearly trying to make a point so will have chosen the questions most appropriate to make that point.
