I certainly don't think the Pass is an essential move to learn at the beginning since there are so few effects that can't be achieved in some other way. However, I've seen people Pass while I've been staring at the deck, trying to watch the Pass, and missed it! That's pretty powerful stuff! So in my opinion, definitely something worth having (if you can do it well), but not worth obsessing over.
