Magic Cafe - Just me ?

Postby jim ferguson » Nov 1st, '11, 15:12

Hi guys.

I wonder if anyone can mention their observations on this. I am a member of the Cafe and have been for some time (i joined TM and the Cafe at the same time). I dont really post much over there - Ive been helping a few guys with certain techniques via PM but havent posted much on the main boards.

Anyway, is it just me or has anyone else noticed that unless you are a known name, or at least ''known'' to the regulars over there, you just arent taken seriously ? It seems many of my posts over there are apparently invisible to these regulars. As an example i posted in a recent thread, and gave someone a reply to some trouble they were having with a move. The move in question i have been using for about 16 - 17 years. I knew exactly what the problem was so thought id help out. Two of the ''known'' guys over there (not known in general, but known at the Cafe) wrote posts after me. One wrote that perhaps someone who was familiar with the move could give advice - so either they never bothered to look at my post, or my advice was deemed not good enough. Then another ''regular'' came along and wrote almost exactly what i wrote

Anyone else had a similar experience ?

jim

I've given up visiting that place, I got fed up with the attitude of some people on there. There are far too many people with big egos who thing that the world revolves around them, it's not a particularly nice place. Stick with TM, a much friendlier forum.

Not personally, but I have always avoided signing up their, because I didn't like what I saw. I only go there if I want a review and there isn't one here or by Jheff.

However, based on my limited experience of the place, I think this is what you are supposed to do:

      1. Post asking why your original post was ignored.
      2. This will be ignored.
      3. Post a third time, pointing out that someone else has come along and repeated your wording. Use of the words "copyright infringement" or "theft" go down pretty well.
      4. The follow-up poster who said the same thing you did will claim that, because you used a comma instead of a semi-colon (or somesuch), he said something quite different from you.
      5. Half a dozen people who had nothing to do with the thread before, but who are friends with the reposter will show up and start having a go at you. They are quite likely not his real friends, but have assumed that status because they too post on the Magic Café a lot.
      6. You defend your position and point out the facts.
      7. You get banned for helping someone.

    Hello Jim,

Unfortunately this is the case with many internet forums.
I no, I have been around them for many years. (Not magic ones)

I suffer from a condition called "Cluster Headaches" & spent many years arguing with members
of certain internet forums, trying to help people with this condition, but alas, for some strange reason there seemed to
be a pecking order, & anything one offered in the way of advice, was either ignored, or disregarded as baloney.
More often than not, I was made to feel like a fart in a space suit.

It's something which has never bothered me, if someone can show me how to do something, & make it easier.
    Then I'm all ears.
Stick around here my friend, don't loose any sleep. I may need your advice .

    CArl..

It's them, not you, though a combative know-it-all attitude raises their hackles. I've personally never had a problem. I avoid obvious trolls and, talk to interesting people on PM.

I was banned from the Magic Cafe for voicing my opinion about one Kevin E Curtin (Devil's Coke Bottle)

I have another account but don't bother using it

Genii Forum and Talk Magic are better anyways

I have never had a real problem on there, but then again I do tend to inhabit the bizarre section most of all and they are, in the main, a nicer bunch in there.

But yourself and Tomo have the advantage of being well known, having both released popular books. I am unknown, over there no-one knows me from Harry. I sometimes get the feeling im seen as something of an outsider. It seems less of the quality of the post, and more who actually wrote it. Unless you're known to them your opinion doesnt cut the mustard.

The newer members are fine, its many of the regulars who seem to be rather sniffish.

Do you use the same name on there or do you have a different user name?

        Hi Freddie.

My username is the same on all forums, here, the Cafe, Magic Woods and The Bunny. I always use my real name.

        Why ?

Because I hadn't seen you on there unless you post in a section I don't visit.

Ah I see. Im occasionally on the card and coin sections, and the ''Ever so Sleightly'' section. As I mentioned, i dont post often - i think i have about 60 posts altogether (i dont know if the post count includes PMs, so it may be even less on the main boards), and that is over about 2 years !

I do read the Bizzare sections from time to time, and have seen yourself on there. Ive never posted in that section though, as i dont have any experience of performing that particular style of magic.

On the whole I think the replies I get from folks on the Magic Cafe tend to be much fuller and more helpful than the replies I receive from folks on this forum. However I think I have seen quite a few examples of people writing stuff on the Magic Cafe without reading the whole thread and repeating what has been said before. I don't think it is anything personal against you Jim, I think its just that a lot of them just skim read what has already been written if at all.

I think the search function on the Magic Cafe is rubbish though. But I do like green.
