hello there.

My stuff is mentalism, but I'm starting to get into traditional card tricks now by demand (the swines!). I think the most important initial skill is in being comfortable in handling a deck well, fast and smoothly.

Hi,

I am working through the Royal Road to Card Magic. It is a classic if you read the reviews in here although not everybody recommends it.

It is a bit heavy in places but has just about everything you will need to start on card tricks

If you want to learn tricks (as opposed to learning sleights just because you can) then Ammars Easy Card Miracle DvD are excellent (if not a little costly). I recently bought them and they have some really strong effects on them that will deliver the desired effect on your audience.

However.. although most of the tricks require a few simple sleights some do assume you know more than just the basics (like the Elmsley Count etc..).

On this the Royal Road to Card Magic is excellent, if you like books. It's cheap and covers a huge array of sleights with some tricks.

On the learning sleights front, in terms of DVD, then Kauffmans DVD is good (although check to make sure it has what you want on it first.. but he does most of the more common stuff.. but no tricks here).

Alternatively you could start getting Daryl's encyclopedia of card sleights (6 or 8 DVDs in all I think). I have some of them and they basically contain more sleights than you can shake a stick at or ever have any chance of ever mastering them all (you won't need all of them anyway). They are expensive at about £30 a go but you may want to consider them after you become more experienced and want to progress further when the enviatble question of "How do I do that ?".

The thing I found when I started was that I had DVDs showing the sleights (like Kauffman's) and apart from those in books (like the RRTCM), no real tricks to speak of and after all this is the whole point as far as I'm concerned isn't it ? So I'd still recommend Ammars series, it's kept me going for ages now and getting RRTCM or a DVD explain how to some of the sleights in real detail to accompany them.

Hi there!

If you're a beginner, you can't do better than Oz Pearlman's Born to Perform Card Magic. It has all the sleight you need to do some great tricks and includes 4 full-length routines, one of which is one of the best tricks out there today, the Biddle Trick. Trust me, it's worth it!

You can buy cards by the dozen here..

http://www.cards4magic.co.uk/acatalog/Cards.html

They are about 20quid (plus a couple of quid for delivery) for a dozen which makes.. (I can hear my cogs moving now.. Ah.. my brain hurts..) about £1.66 or so a packet. (I don;t include delivery as it would cost me more than that in petrol to go round and find some).

A pack of cards usually lasts me between 2 to 4 weeks depending of how much practice I do (and how clean my hands are). When they are finished I use them for working out more destructive tricks (like torn and restored which I'm practicing now) or give them away to friends and family.
