My honest advice is don't bother with all this phony mobile phone, wallet with no cash lark.

These people who mug you at knife point are often so off it with adrenaline and/or fear they're very jittery. Two things you don't want to do with these people waving knives in your face is to * them off or mess them about. Who says these desperate idiots wont demand any jewellery you might have? Hell its even been known for them to march people to cash points. Sure its very very rare, but it happens.

Worse yet, you get them annoyed and flustered you end up getting stabbed, there have been reports of people complying completely and being stabbed anyway as the thief makes their getaway.

Your phone, your cards and your cash is all replaceable and hopefully insured. Getting stabbed isn't worth any of them. Give them what they want a get them away from you as quickly as possible.

Even if you do fight back as lenoir said you can land yourself with even more bother (I'd love to hear more of your story by the way, what bother did it land you in?)

Getting mugged is still thankfully rare, if you are unfortunate enough to be the one they pick, just give them what they want and stay safe

Where's that much needed LIKE button! :D

I have a Nokia 1661 (I think) if they steal it they would actually be doing me a favour. Also I never carry cash, not out of fear of being mugged, I just do not think that statistically it is worth worrying about but because I card everything. The only time I ever have cash is when I travel abroad in which case the bulk of the holiday money remains in the hotel safe and my "daily allowance" goes with me.

I am genuinely sorry to hear about your friend though Tomo, it's unfortunate but in this day and age with so many people walking around with, in many cases, several hundred pounds of gadgetry than can be easily swiped with little effort, by the time you reveal your deterrent it is probably too late.

I'm more likely to be mugged because I wear a three piece suit to work than because I "might" have a smartphone, however my hair may act as a deterrent. :)

I've heard rumours about people carrying metal appearing canes for self defense purposes.

Do you remember FFVII and Cloud Strife... Well if Cloud had brown hair... Or maybe more akin to Edward Scissorhands... :D

That said the hairdresser cut it a little short this time and it may not have "grown in" by next weekend.

Also I regret to inform you Madelon that I shall not be wearing my work, or any other suit to Tab Mentis. Jeans and tshirt is the order of the day. ;)

Sorry to hear about your friend Tomo, shocking state this country has got itself into really. Summed it all up for be about 5 years ago with a top Judge saying that people that mug people's mobiles wouldn't go to prison - why would you let people know that anyway?

The psychological affect of being mugged is quite huge, a friend of a friend got mugged near a poker club we used to play at on Clerkenwell road, and the thing that messed with his mind was the fact that although there were 7/8 hoodies, they were all quite young, BUT they knew how to hunt well in a pack.

I'm quite lucky *touches wood* that I have never been mugged, and given I have lived most of my life in London I do consider that to be quite lucky, although there was one time leaving Kentish Town (rough North London) one night when a man approached me and wanted "4 pounds", he had a certain amount of desperation in his eyes, so I weighed the situation up (my big aluminium snooker case was get out of jail free card) and gave him £2. I looked him in the eye and firmly said, this is all I have

People sometimes ask me why I never smile when I'm about, and its pretty much for the reasons in this thread, maybe when someone sees a 6' 4" medium/well built guy with a moody look, they might just leave me alone

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...

To what extent is the chance of being mugged influenced by general posture? I know (and have experienced) that people who might accost you in the street (for sales or conversion purposes) are much more likely to leave you alone if you walk upright, look confident and as if you know where you are going...

Tomo, very sorry to hear what happened to your friend. It is traumatic.

My approach is to walk straight and with a bit of a swagger when passing teens. And if one of them asks me a question (often the first sign of agression) I turn and face him. I am not small. On the few occasions it has progressed beyond this, I step straight into his space, nose to nose, and rapidly escalate the tension. The guy has to know straight away that if he doesn't back down I might hurt him. (I mightn't be able to, but does he want to take the chance?)

On the one occasion someone drew a knife on me I knocked him over before I even thought about it.

Of course it has taken several years of dedicated over-eating to achieve the bulk necessary for this approach to work.

But a few years ago a local chipper was held up by a man with a shotgun. The proprioter, a man in his early seventies, beat the guy off with a brush. I am sure we can all tell similar stories. Maybe as a society it is time to reclaim our streets, and tell the muggers to * off - and then make them. Remember the London riots? Some people came out to defend their communities. You have to ask, why didn't more?

Why didn't more?
Fear.

Fear of pain.
Fear of bad men.
Fear of the worst case scenario we've all been taught to avoid by not resisting violent people.
Fear of prosecution.

We're a society that has been disarmed, discouraged from defence through instruction and through prosecution of those who defend themselves in a manner fitting the crime visited upon them.
