10p and 5p change to steel in January

Postby Sandman » Nov 5th, '11, 11:57

Hi,

Just thought this might be of interest to some people here.

as the title says new 10p and 5p coins will change to steel from copper in January and will be slightly thicker http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15596596

I got a little excited, when I saw the story on the BBC, too...then I got thinking, and realised that this could actually become something of a double-edged sword, for those of us who use e****ded ]'s.

It may be time to start hoarding a collection of non-M******c 10p's and 5p's

And we get shafted again.
First they take away the backing for our money and base it's value on an imaginary concept... then they take the tons and tons of valuable metal (copper) out of circulation and replace it with a virtually worthless one.
They can dress it up however they like, but we're just being ripped off again.

Oh and "the treasury should foot the bill, not local councils".
Do these hack journalists not realise that whether changes are "paid for" by the councils or by the treasury it's everyday working stiffs who'll really be paying?

I know we're into smoke and mirrors on here, but I'd rather go without in news and politics.

Having coins made from a commodity of value causes even more problem in the economy. The problem is the metal the coins is made of is woth more than the value of the coin. That was one reason in the past gold was substituted for cheaper metals.

I am already doing this - my GF thinks i've gone mad hoarding 5 and 10 pence pieces

The steel is a problem for me (especially the 5p) with a couple of my coin unique routines

Do you reckon I can get my money back for m******c 10p?

As it will now be useless.

The other being the greatest swindle ever conceived.

"What if we could steal everybody's money?"
"Shut up! You could never steel it all."
"No seriously... I think it could work, hear me out... we'll swap the gold for paper, the sliver for a nickel alloy and the copper for steel."
"You're mad - they'll never fall for that."
"I think they will."
"What will the currency be based upon?"
"Well, to start it'll be based on those metals... then we'll take the metals and it'll be based on confidence. After that they'll only be able to SELL the metals for confidence vouchers. The ultimate confidence trick."
"WHAT? Have you been sniffing glue again?"
"Yes, but that's not the point..."

Clearly I'm tangent-ing here, but I think I made the point. ;)

I'm also glad I don't use normal coins (or at least, glad I'm not learning to).
I prefer using other coins if only because I won't go and spend them. I started out trying to use £2 coins but kept spending them and having to wait for more in my change, that's not happened once since I started practicing with half dollars and old english pennies.

I don't like using anything other than UK currency - my specs are always dubious of anything else

having said that no one seems to be able to make decent UK gaff coins anyway

I feel that way too - partly. There are a few sleights, particularly from the David Roth book, that I just can't do with current UK coinage - it's just too small. But old English pennies are fine.

Generally, for me the beauty of most coin magic is that it can be done completely impromptu with whatever coins I have on me or can borrow.

Me too

Biting someone's 10p and spitting it back together

so simple, the easiest trick I know and my specs are always begging to see it again, of course I don't repeat straight away as it 'hurts my teeth'

I always find strangers easier to work with rather my friends because they always want to inspect everything maticulously before and after tricks

Bitten, pen/cig thru and so on - yes, it really would look wrong to use foreign money there (or even your own for that matter) but with a throwaway line that "I keep these on me so I can always show people this without worrying about spending it and being unable" if you feel you're "being chased" I see no issue.

"Why do you use foreign money?"
"I used to use normal money, but it's so small. It's much easier for people to see what I'm doing if I use these."

You could even just flat-out lie and say "It'd be too easy for me to just hide a small coin from view... with a bigger coin like this you know I can't do that."

Still being not-far-from-a-muggle I can't remember seeing someone use American money and finding it suspicious, and if I was, I'm not so sure I wouldn't buy any of the above (or other plausible) explanations.

Of course, you use what you're comfortable with, say what you like and have fun with it. :)

I must admit three fly with Morgan Dollars is probably more practical and looks better then say 2p or £2 coins

Surely this will make a coin bend harder to accomplish then?

Might do but if you can bend 2p coins which are already steel cored you might be OK with the new 10p.
