Gaffed card - what to use for?

Postby JammyT » Nov 6th, '11, 15:48

Hi All,

I'm unsure of how I can put a couple of gaffed cards to use

a 5 of diamonds with missing centre pip

and a 7 of spades (7 pips) with one 9 of spades index (two index card) and the other a 7

never really seen any card tricks that use these so am at a bit of a loss

Force a 4 of diamonds, lose it in the pack then find and produce your 5 of diamonds. They'll say "no it was the four" so you get them to count the pips.

There will be a much better way of presenting the above but I'm on the train and not feeling very creative.

In fact, now I re-read what I've type it doesn't sound great! :?

How did you end up with two random gaff cards? lol

You could force either the 7 or 9 of spades, turn the deck round and show that the card has vanished from the deck (if they chose the 7 it's now the 9, and vice versa). Obviously you can't let them pull the card out of the deck fully.

Just a thought, probably not a great one, but I guess you could use the idea to come up with something.

You could use the 5 of Diamonds in the 'Picking of the Pip' routine you'll find in Dai Vernon's 'Inner Card Trilogy'.

Thanks this is as far as I could take your idea so far

I forced the 4 of D then lost it in the pack

'read their mind' and brought their card to the top but because I'm not very good at mind reading or because it wasn't very clear yada yada..

incorrectly produced the actual 5 of D from the 'top' (DL) 'that's not it', 'mine was the four'

I then placed the (gaff) card face down with the 'central pip' in between their thumb and index asking them to squeeze it

they have made the extra pip disappear and the 5 of D is now a 4 (with a 5 index)

so it turned out I wasn't a very good mind reader and the spec is the only that seems to have any magical ability

it's from a small set of which I have found use for the others

I think you are on to something

trying to work out or find a trick that invloves a force of either card value have it returned to a partial deck

fan the deck and it disappears only to reappear in a different stack of cards

kind of like 'strange travellers' ???

Erm not sure to be honest, just seen the principle used before. I'm sure you could use it to achieve the effect you described though. I don't use gaff cards myself so I can't say I'm a particularly good person to ask.

was thinking you could force the 4 of D

have it lost in the pack

read specs mind and bring it to the top

actually 'incorrectly' bring the 5 of D to the top

colour change 5 of D to the gaff making central pip disappear

now colour change again (after moving actual 5 of D) from gaff to 4 of D with different coloured back

as if I can't quite get it right i.e not good at mind reading, produce wrong card, right amount of pips wrong index, right amount pips right index wrong back colour

or maybe force the 4D, bring the 5 to the face of the deck with the gaff underneath, reveal the mistake, perform the erdnase colour change while pretending to remove the middle pip?

not even sure why I posted it to be honest, but as soon as I did I had bad thoughts

Pickman - do you know where I can see a good Picking of the pip routine? (Web or DVD)

doesn't have to be Dai but the routines I have actually seen (i.e not read) were too short for me to bother practicing.

You'll find 'Picking off the pip' amongst these colour changes. http://www.videosurf.com/video/table-pi ... ion=inline"

In 'Inner Card Trilogy' it's not really a routine, more a description of the colour change but a basic routine would be to force the regular 5 of diamonds, make the colour change with the gaff 5 and give the impression you have removed one of the pips. You could have a cut out pip stuck to your palm and reveal this as the plucked pip but I don't think it would be too practical and might be gilding the lily, somewhat.
